Just Walking in the Rain
Ray Johnnie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Getting soaking wet
Torturing my heart by trying to forget
Just walking in the rain
So alone and blue
All because my heart still remembers you
They always stare at me
Shake their heads in sorrow
Saying, who can that fool be
Just walking in the rain
Thinking how we met
Knowing things could change
Somehow I can't forget
(Just walking in the rain)
(Walking in the rain)
(Walking in the rain)
(Just walking in the rain, all day I)
People come to the windows
They always stare at me
Their shaking their heads in sorrow
Saying, who can that fool be
(Now who can he be)
Just walking in the rain
(Walking in the rain)
Thinking how we met
(Walking in the rain)
Knowing things have changed
(Walking in the rain)
Somehow I can't forget
(Walking in the rain)
Ray Johnnie's "Just Walking in the Rain" is a melancholic and poignant expression of heartbreak, loneliness, and regret. The song opens with the singer walking aimlessly in the rain, soaked to the bone, fighting the pain of trying to forget his former lover. His heart is heavy and his soul is weary, and he finds solace in his solitary wandering, even though it only seems to intensify his anguish. The refrain "walking in the rain" is repeated throughout the song, underscoring the singer's feeling of isolation and his inability to shake off his memories.
As he walks, people stare at him from their windows, pitying him or perhaps judging him for his appearance or behavior. He imagines their thoughts and murmurs, wondering who he might appear to be to them, but he is too consumed by his own emotions to care. The second verse continues in the same vein, as he recalls the happier times he had with his ex-lover, and how much they have changed since then. He can't escape the memories, even in the relentless rain, and the song fades out as he continues to walk and ponder his situation.
The song taps into the universal experience of heartbreak and the feeling of being alone in a crowd, as well as the soothing and cathartic power of nature, as represented by the rain. The lyrics are simple but effective in conveying the emotional turmoil of a broken heart, and the melody adds to the haunting and reflective tone of the song.

I'm 66 years old, when I was a young teenager, I "discoverd" Johnnie Ray. Other than Dean Martin, Johnnie Ray was the coolest around. I still love his misic. Thanks for posting.

I used to sing along with this tune as a little boy in 1956. My family got a good laugh out of it. This is the first time I've heard it since that time.

I dedicate this record to my mum, who sadly passed away on 22 December 2015. Doreen was a big Johnnie Ray fan. I remember mum telling me about the times back in the 1950s, when she would play Johnnie Ray records on the jukebox, in the milk bar, in Northenden, South Manchester. God bless, RIP ❤️.
