Don't You Know Who I Am
Reb Fountain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drunk little Indian boy they said
Spouting off his mouth bout the great man's debt
What's a little brag between boys in the cell
You never know who's listening at the gates of hell
They're just like video stores press rewind delete
On those that don't work that don't fit nice and neat
In the future we'd say he's worth something
Hell I coulda been somebody

Don't you know who I am

In certain circles well you can't touch me
I'm a dance around you know I'm connected to the powers that be
Like Ali you ain't got nothing on me
You put my tail in jail is this a place called hell
Wheelin' and dealin' on a Saturday night
Caught between a calling and a stitched up fight
Brushing birds that travel hell out of here
Can you see me in your eyes

Don't you know who I am

Don't you cry brother there's a knife in your back
Don't you cry sister he ain't coming back
Caught you trying to make your way to kingdom come
Well this is my territory
It's god's will to stamp what's mine
It's god's word that bites your tongue and marks me divine
The moment we lay our hands on the world she's disfigured
Hell we can touch her up

Don't you know who I am

No shame no fear no highway out of here
No shame no fear no highway

I couldn't fake it if I wanted to
I think I'll make it if follow through
I used to ask you what I needed best
Got sucker punched and nearly lost my head
Now I'll mount you like an avalanche
King Mitus kills his queen for a fighting chance
I'll go on record make your mark on my map
Brush a bird take my word

Don't you know who I am

He woke up in his mother's arms
Dawn already he had heard the call
Chee Chee honey well its time to rise
Spread your wings little goose and we'll take flight
He flew over the devil of the wasteland
Six strings playing on your heartland
Death in your pockets and a bird unsung
This is the star of progress

I set out on an expedition
Hold fire girl with your new religion
Keep it simple with your pop pop songs
God forbid you change the record
I draw lines in symphony animal savagery refugee just like me
Don't believe the hype
Out of the wasteland we come
Little girls little boys and the nameless ones

Rise up o children wont you dance with me
Rise up little children come and set me free
Rise little ones rise
No shame no fear

Don't you know who I am

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Reb Fountain's "Don't You Know Who I Am" explore themes of power, identity, and the corruption of society. The song opens with the image of a "drunk little Indian boy" spouting off about the "great man's debt," suggesting that he is someone who is not taken seriously by others. However, the lyrics also suggest that this boy has the potential to be somebody great in the future. The chorus, "Don't you know who I am," highlights the importance of recognition and power in society. The verses also touch on the idea of being in a position of power, where one is "connected to the powers that be," and how that position can grant a sense of invincibility.

The song then touches on the darker aspects of this pursuit of power, with lines like "It's god's will to stamp what's mine / It's god's word that bites your tongue and marks me divine." The lyrics suggest that those in power will do whatever it takes to maintain it, even if it means disfiguring the world around them. The final verse, however, takes a turn, with the image of a young child rising up and flying over the wasteland. The chorus, "Rise up little children come and set me free," suggests that it is the children, the nameless and powerless, who have the potential to change the world for the better.

Perhaps those commenting negatively about the video, do not know that 'shave for a cure' is a New Zealand fundraising initiative for the Cancer Society. People are sponsored to shave their heads. Cause, you know, many cancer sufferers have to shave their heads when their hair falls out in treatment, its a solidarity thing. Thank's Reb and awesome music :)

@johnkirk3947

Perhaps the thumbs downers wouldn't appreciate great music if it punched them in their fat faces?
