Have I Told You Lately
Red Stewart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there's no one else above you
You fill my heart with gladness
Take away all my sadness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do

For the morning sun and all it's glory
Greets the day with hope and comfort, too
You fill my heart with laughter
Somehow, you make it better

Ease my troubles, that's what you do

There's a love that's divine
And it's yours and it's mine
Like the sun
And at the end of the day

We should give thanks and pray
To the one, to the one

Have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there's no one else above you

You fill my heart with gladness
Take away all my sadness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do

There's a love that's divine
And it's yours and it's mine

Like the sun
And at the end of the day
We should give thanks and pray
To the one, to the one

Have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there's no one else above you
You fill my heart with gladness
Take away all my sadness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do
Take away my sadness, fill my life with gladness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do

Take away my sadness, fill my life with gladness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Red Stewart's song "Have I told you lately" are a declaration of love and gratitude to a significant other. The singer asks if they have conveyed their feelings recently and acknowledges that no one else compares to their love interest. The person in question brings happiness into their life, alleviates their troubles and makes everything better. The singer believes that their love is divine and that it fills their heart, like the morning sun that brings hope and comfort.

The chorus is repeated several times to accentuate the message that the singer deeply loves and appreciates the person they are addressing. The song suggests that being grateful for the love and happiness in our lives is essential, and giving thanks and praying for it is necessary at the end of the day.

Red Stewart's "Have I told you lately" was written in 1989, and after being performed by Stewart, it was covered by several other musicians, including Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, and Andrea Bocelli. Van Morrison's 1995 version put the song in the spotlight as it became a Top 5 hit in the UK Charts. It also won a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1996.

One day in our kitchen, this song came on and my husband dedicated this song to me as he and I was waltzing, hugs and embracing each other with love. He passed away 6 months after with cancer. And every time I hear it I just cry thinking of that day waltzing in our kitchen. Love and miss him everyday. My best catch ever. I reeled him towards me and never let him go until that last day I had to say farewell to my Gordie from Newcastle Upon Tyne. I have always loved this song but it came to light more with open eyes how precious we all are. Appreciation is my biggest of all and greatful for God bought us together.

I live in Alabama USA. 🇺🇸🇺🇸 I have an "unofficially adopted" granddaughter in Finland. She is not even 30 yet, but is having a tremendous amount of pain. She had recently spent several months in the hospital because her ex had been poisoning her evening tea for TEN YEARS. As you can imagine this
caused severe and lifelong internal damage to many of her organs. She is so very talented in numerous fields and is a brilliant young lady. But because of her body shutting down, she can barely walk, has lost a lot of weight, and has ZERO INCOME now. She has to go to the hospital every day for different reasons so they can help her. Some of which include more surgical procedures, testing and more rehab. She needs all of the love and support I, we, God can give her. Please pray for this loving lady.

I have told her THIS is our song. Thank you Rod Stewart. I loved this song since the first time I heard it on the radio years ago. It's so heartfelt. 💜

Thank you. 🎵🎶
