Their debut album, "Everything Sucks" (1995), was an underground hit and led to a deal with Mojo Records (see also Mojo), an indie label. "Turn the Radio Off" (1996) established the band in the underground music scene, and they began touring throughout the USA. After the single "Sell Out" began breaking into the mainstream, including MTV, the album made an appearance on the charts. The ska revival was short-lived, however, and "Why Do They Rock So Hard?" (1998) did not lead the group to the mainstream.
Reel Big Fish released "Cheer Up" (2002) which began a movement into harder rock and pop sounds, with much less ska than the previous albums. The song "Where Have You Been?" was aimed at a wider audience, trying to drop the less popular ska sound, but was met with little mainstream success, despite the video. Their second most recent studio album was "We're Not Happy Until You're Not Happy" (2005).
They recently released "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" (2006) which includes 2 discs worth or their own tunes and a few covers of popular songs along with a DVD. They have worked on the soundtrack to BASEketball, which included a cover of A-Ha's Take On Me.
In 2006, they split from Jive records, who produced a "Best of" album against the will of the band, who could not prevent the release. The band has made a campaign to try and stop people buying the album.
Their 7th album "Monkeys For Nothing and the Chimps For Free" (2007) includes some songs that were previously recorded and released on other albums. It was also the first album with the band's new label, Rock Ridge Records.
In 2009, they released "Fame, Fortune, and Fornication" an album composed of covers of older songs, including "Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty, and "Nothin' But a Good Time" by Poison.
In 2012, Reel Big Fish released "Candy Coated Fury", which is their second album on Rock Ridge Records. This album was met with heavy amounts of criticism from fans and reviewers alike. PunkNews.org gave the album a 2/10.
in 2014, they released "Happy Skalidays", a holiday themed EP.
Their current release is 2018's "Life Sucks... Let's Dance!", which gained generally positive reviews from fans and critics.

I'd Rather Get It Wrong
Reel Big Fish Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'd rather get it wrong with you than right with anyone else
I'd rather sing along with you out of tune than sing it all by myself
And you sure drive me crazy but at least we're on this road together baby
And I'd rather get it wrong with you than right with anybody else
[Verse 1]
Well, we squabble and we argue
Or a fire in a igloo
They ridicule us in laughter
Say that our ever after
Would be a disaster
But we both know what's up
We got nothin' here but love
And we stick together when everybody else is too busy being stuck up
[Chorus]
I'd rather get it wrong with you than right with anyone else
I'd rather sing along with you out of tune than sing it all by myself
And you sure drive me crazy but at least we're on this road together baby, oh yeah
And I'd rather get it wrong with you than right with anybody else
[Verse 2]
Let's talk about good friends
Just using quill pens
As a means to their ends
Let's talk about people you think you can trust
Now honey, there's nothin' more dangerous
But that's not the story with us
I've got your back when things get rough
And we stick together whether it's bad weather or whether it's good luck
[Chorus]
And I'd rather get it wrong with you than right with anyone else
I'd rather sing along with you out of tune than sing it all by myself
And you sure drive me crazy but at least we're on this road together baby, oh yeah
And I'd rather get it wrong with you than right with anybody else
And you sure drive me crazy but at least we're on this road together baby, oh yeah yeah yeah yeah
I'd rather get it wrong with you than right
I'd rather get it wrong with you than right
I'd rather get it wrong with you than right with anybody else
In the chorus of "I'd Rather Get It Wrong" by Reel Big Fish, the singer expresses a strong preference for making mistakes and having challenges with a specific person, rather than being successful or in harmony with anyone else. This suggests a deep connection and bond with this individual that transcends perfection or conformity. The lines "I'd rather sing along with you out of tune than sing it all by myself" illustrates a willingness to embrace imperfections and flaws as long as they are shared with this person, emphasizing the value of companionship and unity even in moments of discord.
In the first verse, the song describes a tumultuous relationship characterized by conflicts and disagreements, comparable to the dynamic between a snake and a mongoose or a fire in an igloo - situations that are inherently incompatible. Despite external criticism and doubts about the sustainability of their relationship, the couple remains committed to each other, recognizing that their love is the foundation that keeps them together. The mention of others being "busy being stuck up" implies a sense of superiority or judgment from outside parties, contrasting with the genuine connection and solidarity shared by the couple.
The second verse delves into the topic of friendship and trust, highlighting the rarity of finding true loyalty and reliability in people. The lyrics suggest that while many friendships may be superficial or driven by selfish motives, the bond between the singer and their partner is characterized by unwavering support and loyalty. The line "And we stick together whether it's bad weather or whether it's good luck" underlines the commitment to stand by each other through both challenging times and moments of joy, emphasizing the strength of their relationship in the face of adversity.
Overall, the song conveys a message of resilience, loyalty, and the importance of genuine connections in the midst of imperfections and challenges. The repeated chorus reaffirms the singer's choice to navigate life's ups and downs with their partner, valuing the shared experiences and emotions over perfection or external validation. The upbeat, lively tone of the song juxtaposed with the theme of overcoming obstacles in a relationship adds depth and relatability to the lyrics, resonating with listeners who may also prioritize authenticity and connection in their own lives.
