Mr. Blue
Rene Klijn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Winter sounds the crying
Like an old man slowly dying
And the only sound, the wind that fills the trees
Even colder comes the moon
And though it never seems too soon
A sudden stillness as the rainfall starts to freeze

I'm Mr Blue
I'm here to stay with you
And no matter what you do
When you're lonely
I'll be lonely too

I'll come to you at night
When all the world is sleeping tight
And lie beside you, till the early morning dew
You can't hear me, you can't see
But you can feel me when you read
The folded letter she left addressed to you

I'm Mr Blue
I'm here to stay with you
And no matter what you do
When you're lonely
I'll be lonely too

A young girl, she is shaded
Bears the scars that never faded
Of the baby that was born on Christmas Day
While the heavens sing their song
A child's life is never long
'Cos the food supplies will only last a day

I'm Mr Blue
I'm here to stay with you
And no matter what you do
When you're lonely
I'll be lonely too

Patriot emotion
Is the cause of the commotion
After all there's really no-one here to blame
Soldiers taking orders, 'cos we must defend the borders
Of our nation (and the other side's the same)

I'm Mr Blue
I'm here to stay with you
And no matter what you do

When you're lonely
I'll be lonely too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of René Klijn's song Mr. Blue depict a melancholic atmosphere with the onset of winter. The first stanza talks about the sadness that comes with the winter season, as if the whole world is crying with the sounds of a slowly dying old man. The only sound that can be heard is the rustling of the tree leaves. The second stanza introduces the character of Mr. Blue, who promises to be there for the listener even during lonely times. He is invisible but still makes his presence felt when the reader reads a folded letter addressed to them. He comes to the listener at night when the world is asleep and stays with them till the early morning dew.

The third stanza talks about a young girl who is bearing the scars of a child who was born on Christmas Day, and the fact that the child's life is never long. Klijn talks about food supplies lasting only a day, hinting at poverty and hunger. The final stanza speaks of patriotism and how soldiers take orders to defend their borders, but at the end of the day, there is really no one to blame when emotions run high. Overall, Mr. Blue is about finding comfort in times of loneliness, highlighting the harshness of reality, and the need for empathy in trying times.
