Nothing's Feeling New
Republica Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything that I ever found
I'm switching over to a low tar brand
Got cable video with surround sound
I lie in bed and watch the world go round

Got CNN baby
Got ISDN baby
Everything is useless
Everything is stupid

Nothing's feeling new
Everything is useless
Everybody's clueless
Nothing's feeling new

Got Sherman filters and Virgin Peps
Got mini disc and virtual pets yeah
Fizzy drinks are gonna rot your brain
Got Patrick Cox mules and Donna Karan

I got the wide screen Star Wars Trilogy
Got belly rings and flings and Hard Candy
That's Urban Decay baby
Got Space NK oh baby

Everything is useless
Everything is stupid
Nothing's feeling new
Everything is useless

Everybody's clueless
Nothing's feeling new

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Republica's song "Nothing's Feeling New" seem to be a manifesto of disillusionment with the contemporary consumer culture. The lead singer is listing all the material possessions she has acquired, but instead of feeling happy or fulfilled, she finds them all useless and unfulfilling. She has a low tar brand cigarette, but she still smokes. She has cable TV with surround sound, but all she does is lie in bed and watch the world go by. She has access to CNN, ISDN, got Sherman filters, Virgin Peps, mini disc, virtual pets, belly rings, flings and Hard Candy. But instead of feeling excited or grateful, she feels numb and uninspired. She notes that everyone she knows is just as clueless as she is, and nothing feels new or exciting anymore.

Through these lyrics, the band expresses a sense of ennui and frustration with the modern world. The lead singer may have everything she's supposed to want or need, but she's left feeling empty and isolated. The lyrics also highlight the feeling that all the stuff we buy, use, consume, and discard may be just distractions that keep us from confronting deeper issues in our lives. The song may be a call to break away from the consumer culture and find deeper meaning in life beyond material goods.
