most people "assume" that SOMEWHERE was sung by Maria (Carol Lawrence) or Anita ( Chita Rivera). But it was Reri Grist, soprano who sang it in the middle of the "Somewhere, Ballet". I wanted to give credit where credit is due, so I made this video for her.

Reri Grist was one of the greatest soubrette sopranos in history. The favorite of most European conductors during her peak. Couldn’t get arrested in the US. Wonder why? It’s just disgusting. She was spectacular.

Reri Grist was actually a supremely talented African-American opera singer. I've been a WSS fan for twenty years yet it was only recently I discovered Ms. Grist and that she was one of the players in the production. She sang this with passion and heart. :-)

@@sgnmath1234 I have a good reason... back then there were often hard & distinct barriers to success for talented African-Americans in the classical world--look up the life of the pianist/composer Philippa Duke Schuyler. The Black musical legends who broke through were pioneers. Their legacies are an awesome part of African-American history and American history in general.

Thank you for this. The fact that she is African American is not widely known. To this day, I am certain most are not aware of this. Mentioning her race does not take away from the craft of music, her music, it merely educates those of as to the variety of people who actually sing opera and highlights her major contribution to such a significant play of our time. She deserves recognition.

Beautiful, understated interpretation, focusing more upon its musicality than on the dramatic nature of the lyrics. Such a fantastic musical, I never tire of it, nearly 50 years after first seeing/hearing it. The combination of Bernstein and Sondheim is unbeatable.

Since lovable Reri=Grist had sung an unforgettable song in Mahler's No4 symphony in 1960, I've been loving her voice very much.
I must declare that she is one of the most lovely and attractive soprano singers. Of course, her 「Somewhere」 is also awfully fantastic. And we Japanese are remembering her.

Reri Grist was 25 when she recorded this song in the original cast Lp of WEST SIDE STORY. That was way back in 1957 under the direction of Leonard Bernstein.

I can remember this version on the old LP that my mom had. I think I about wore it out on this song. Later on, in High School, I had the opportunity to perform in our Crete-Monee High School production of West Side Story. Circa...1982. During voice lessons, I had the opportunity to perform the quintet while still in H.S. After H.S., I auditioned for the local Drama Group using 'Tonight'. West Side Story is still the greatest musical ever. Reri Grist had such a beautiful voice.

It was an honor to see her yesterday at the BC/EFA Gypsy of the Year Awards as they paid tribute to the 50th Anniversary of WSS. She along with 20+ Original cast members left me in speechless and in tears! Thank you!

Let's acknowledge Ms. Grist's talent and contributions to the original Bway production. The reunion rehearsal a couple of years ago permitted us to witness the purity of her voice. I would love to see her perform HER favorite songs in NYC! Yes Imsubramaniam, she is seriously underrated!!!

Her Mozart and R. Strauss roles were brilliantly performed, unrivaled, in fact. I believe she may have been better appreciated in Europe, but I can't say as I was still quite young when she was in full career. She lacked, of course, the size voice needed for the dramatic roles more popular in the big opera houses in the US in the '50's and '60's. Her gift was an angelic voice over which she had perfect control. I don't know why I say "was", I believe she is still living in Germany.

It is a song with hopeful dreams, with a harmonic backdrop of hope unrealized, hope unfulfilled. Perfect song for West Side Story, a tale of doomed lovers.
Lost in the beauty and stately melancholy is that the song symbolizes the aspirations, the hope, the bargaining, the sadness, the terror, of grief and death, and passing away. (Think of the stages of grief, or of loss, or of separation, or of terminal illness. ) It is on the surface a song of hope, but in truth is a song of soothing the blackest terror and pain and gives salvation to the broken (person) by allowing them to forgive the circumstances and let go.

This song is from the Broadway musical WEST SIDE STORY. As far as I know, Maria Callas never sang songs from Broadway musicals. She might have been a personal friend of composer Leonard Bernstein, but I doubt he offered this song to her.

most people make that mistake.I the original cast recording of WEST SIDE STORY, Somewhere appears as the middle part of SOMEWHERE (BALLET) a long 7 minutes piece beginning and ending with a duet by Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence. If you get the libretto of the show, you will notice that the SOMEWHERE ballad is sung by "Consuelo", played in the show by soprano Reri Grist. It was very unfair to Reri Grist that her ballad was not singled out on the record label.(Film version was MARIA)
