Somewhere
Reri Grist And Ensemble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I will take you away
Take you far, far away, out of here
Far far away till the walls and the streets disappear
Somewhere there must be a place we can feel free
Somewhere there's got to some place for you and for me

It's a place for us
Somewhere a place for us
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere

There's a time for us
Some day a time for us
Time together with time to spare
Time to look
Time to care
Some day
Somewhere
We'll find a new way of living
We'll find a way of forgiving
Somewhere

There's a place for us
A time and place for us
Hold my hand and we're halfway there
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow
Some day
Somewhere

There's a place for us
There's a place for us
There's a place for us

Hold my hand and we're halfway there
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow

Some day
Somewhere

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Reri Grist's song "Somewhere" are about finding a place of peace and freedom. The singer longs to take someone away and escape the confines of their current surroundings. They believe that there must be a place where they can feel free, where there is peace and open air. The lyrics suggest that the singer and their companion will find a new way of living, and a way of forgiving. This optimistic song is about hope for the future and the belief that somewhere there is a place where they can be happy.

The song was originally written for the musical "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. "Somewhere" was first performed on Broadway in 1957 and has since become a popular standard. Over the years, the song has been covered by many artists, including Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, and Tom Waits. The song has also been featured in numerous films and TV shows, most notably in the 1961 film adaptation of "West Side Story."

There's a place for us,
Somewhere a place for us.
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere.
There's a time for us,
Some day a time for us,
Time together with time to spare,
Time to look, time to care,
Some day!
Somewhere.
We'll find a new way of living,
We'll find a way of forgiving
Somewhere
There's a place for us,
A time and place for us.
Hold my hand and we're halfway there.
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow,
Some day,
Somewhere!

most people "assume" that SOMEWHERE was sung by Maria (Carol Lawrence) or Anita ( Chita Rivera). But it was Reri Grist, soprano who sang it in the middle of the "Somewhere, Ballet". I wanted to give credit where credit is due, so I made this video for her.

@VoxResource

Thank you so much for this!

Reri Grist was one of the greatest soubrette sopranos in history. The favorite of most European conductors during her peak. Couldn’t get arrested in the US. Wonder why? It’s just disgusting. She was spectacular.

She was 25 when she recorded this. Such a beautiful, emotionally direct sound. Nothing overdone. Just perfect

@JasonSmith-vj1de

She's now 89

@gentleeyes

the other versions don't even sort of compare to the beauty, honesty, vulnerability, hope, and pain of this one.

@gentleeyes

Incomparable. So beautiful and a greatly underrated soprano in general.
