The group was founded by Richard 23 and Luc Van Acker with Al Jourgensen as their producer. According to Jourgensen, the band got their name after a fight in a Chicago bar in 1983. Jourgensen, Richard 23 and Luc Van Acker celebrated the formation of the new band with a few drinks. The evening then ended up in a brawl, with bar stools being thrown through the establishment's windows. As he was throwing the trio out, the owner, a man Jourgensen recalls was named Dess, shouted, "I'm calling the police! You guys are a bunch of revolting cocks!" The trio subsequently decided to use the name for their band.
Their first release was No Devotion on Wax Trax! Records in 1985. The single was quickly followed by an album, Big Sexy Land (1986), featuring a mix of industrial, hard rock, and EBM with dominating sampling and strong synthesized beats.
Losing Richard 23 due to creative differences, the group's remaining two members were augmented by a rapidly changing set of musicians centered on Chris Connelly (Cocksure, Bells Into Machines, Murder Inc., and Damage Manual), Paul Barker (Ministry, Lead Into Gold, Flowering Blight, and Bells Into Machines), and Bill Rieflin (Ministry, Pigface, R.E.M., and King Crimson), with around twenty others as irregular contributors or guest artists.
The following live album, You Goddamned Son of a Bitch (1988), featured a return to Ministry-like industrial rock - the Big Sexy Land tracks embedded in shouting and noise. This trend continued on Beers, Steers, and Queers (1990), layering sample over sample and pushing ever further into distortion. Linger Ficken' Good (1993) was released by Sire Records and was a tamer affair, most tracks returning to the less layered material. Included was a cover of Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?," also released as a single. A tour was planned but cancelled, and the band quietly came to an end in 1994.
In 2004, Jourgensen and Phildo Owens (Skatenigs, Snow Black) revived the group. They released an album entitled Cocked and Loaded (2006). Caliente (Dark Entries), a cover of sorts of Dark Entries by Bauhaus, with vocalist Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers), was featured on the soundtrack to Saw II in 2005.
After assembling a touring line up to open for Ministry on the MasterBaTour of 2006, Jourgensen chose vocalist Josh Bradford (Stayte, Simple Shelter, V.H.S.), keyboardist Clayton Worbeck (Stayte, Simple Shelter), and guitarist Sin Quirin (Society 1, Ministry and ReVamp) as the new full-time members for the Revolting Cocks, now simply being called RevCo. The group recorded Sex-O Olympic-O and officially released the album on March 3, 2009. It was followed up by the last RevCo album Got Cock?, released on April 13, 2010.
In celebration of Wax Trax! Records, the "Wax Trax! Records Retrospectacle: 33 1/3 Year Anniversary" was held from April 15-17, 2011 at the Metro in Chicago, Illinois, United States. As a part of the lineup, Chris Connelly, Paul Barker and Luc Van Acker performed Revolting Cocks songs with various guests. For their performance on the 17th, Richard 23 joined them on stage to sing lead vocals on No Devotion.
In 2014, Chris Connelly and Jason Novak (Acumen Nation, DJ? Acucrack, Iron Lung Corp) formed Cocksure, a project that bridges the gap between Wax Trax! era industrial dance music and the future sounds of mass corruption. The project is very influenced by the early RevCo sound, and has been described as "where the Revolting Cocks left off in 1994."

Butcher Flower's Woman
Revolting Cocks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She did what she could
Nothing beyond
What a good girl would
Did you take the bait?
Oh, woman, did you take that bait?
When you fell like the butchered
Cut a fresh new life
All that pale blue broken
Did you choke on your fist?
Oh, woman, did you take that bait?
I made an appointment
Do you want to take her
Don't call it by name;
B.U.T.C.H.E.R.
Were you that impressed?
Oh, baby, that makes two of us
Did you make an appointment?
Were you that impressed?
Did you take what you needed
And kill the rest?
You ought to take a leaf
Out of daddy's book
All blood and petals
Hanging from a meat hook
'Cause she who breathes last
Or not at all
Hounding acrobats
With saber and tongs
Curse the bastard eyes
With a rag you stole
From a bleeding butcher boy's empty hole
The lyrics of Butcher Flower's Woman by Revolting Cocks is a commentary on patriarchal society and the pressure put on women to conform to societal expectations of being a "good girl". The song is told from the perspective of a male protagonist who is questioning the woman's choices and actions. The opening stanza talks about the woman's limitations and how she has done nothing beyond what a "good girl would". The line "did you take the bait?" can be interpreted as the singer questioning if the woman has succumbed to societal pressure and taken the bait.
The chorus talks about the woman falling like the butchered onto slabs, which could be a metaphor for how women are metaphorically "butchered" by society's expectations. The line "did you choke on your fist?" could be suggesting that the woman has suffocated her own voice in order to conform. The second verse introduces the idea of an appointment, which could be interpreted as the woman submitting to societal expectations of fulfilling a certain role or job. The singer asks if the woman is impressed by this and "did she take what she needed and kill the rest?" - this could be implying that the woman has submitted to patriarchy in order to achieve her own goals, but at the cost of other women.
The final stanza has some of the most graphic language of the song, with references to blood, meat hooks, and a butcher boy's empty hole. It could be interpreted as a commentary on the violent nature of patriarchy and how it often leads to aggression and a lack of empathy towards women. Overall, Butcher Flower's Woman is a critique of society's expectations of women and how women often perpetuate these expectations onto themselves, leading to a cycle of oppression.

Oh, woman, did you take that bait?
Did you fall for that trick, dear?
When you fell like the butchered
When you were slain like a cow for meat
Onto slabs wide open
Lying on the butcher's counter
Cut a fresh new life
Made a new start
All that pale blue broken
All the shattered, blue dreams
Did you choke on your fist?
Did you find it hard to digest?
Oh, woman, did you take that bait?
Did you fall for it again, dear?
I made an appointment
I scheduled a meeting
Do you want to take her
Do you want her to accompany you?

Out of daddy's book
From your father's experience
All blood and petals
A gruesome and destructive scenario
Hanging from a meat hook
Attached to a butcher's hook
'Cause she who breathes last
As it is said that the one who dies last
Or not at all
Or living without compromise.
Hounding acrobats
Pursuing those who are wild and free
With saber and tongs
Using brutal tools for torture
Curse the bastard eyes
Cursing the eyes of the cursed
With a rag you stole
Using a cloth you stole
From a bleeding butcher boy's empty hole
From an empty and wounded butcher's basket
