17 Days
Revolution/Prince Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Called you yesterday
You didn't answer your phone
The main drag is knowing that
You probably weren't alone

So here I sit in my lonely room
Lookin' for my sunshine
But all I've got is two cigarettes
And this broken heart of mine

So let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

You've been gone seventeen days
Seventeen long nights
The main drag is knowing that
You're holding someone else tight

I want to to call you everyday
And beg you to be near me
But I know your head is underwater
I doubt that you could hear me

So let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

Ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Seventeen days
Ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Seventeen days

Called you yesterday
You didn't answer your phone
If you're the one who's always lonely
Then I'm the one who's always alone

So here I sit in my lonely room
Lookin' for my sunshine
All I've got is two cigarettes
And this broken heart of mine

Oh, so let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

(Oh, let the rain come down)
(Let the rain come down)
(Let the rain come down, down) why don't you answer your phone, babe?

(Let the rain come down)
(Let the rain come down)
(Let the rain come down, down) seventeen days

(Let the rain come down)

(Let the rain come down)
(Let the rain come down, down) seventeen days

Overall Meaning

In "17 Days," Prince sings about the longing and heartbreak of waiting for someone who has been gone for 17 days. He tries to call the person but doesn't get an answer, leading him to believe that they are probably with someone else. Despite his loneliness, he recognizes that the person he's missing is likely going through their own struggles and may not be able to hear him even if he were to call.

The repetition of "Let the rain come down" throughout the chorus could be seen as a symbol of Prince's emotions and the tears he's shedding over his lost love. The rain represents his sadness and the release of it, as he hopes for a cathartic experience to help him move on.

Interestingly, "17 Days" was originally written as a B-side for Prince's hit song "When Doves Cry" but ended up gaining more popularity in its own right. It also features Prince's signature falsetto vocals and a groovy guitar riff that complements the melancholic tone of the lyrics.
