Rhett Akins had a band by the time he was eleven. In 1992, he moved to Nashville to follow his dream of becoming a country music star. He received a record deal from Decca Records after they heard a few of his demos. He debuted his first album A Thousand Memories in 1994. Two of the songs on the album made it into the top 40 of the charts, but it wasn't until a year later that he made it big. In 1995, he released the song "That Ain't My Truck," which made it into the top five. He released the album Somebody New in 1996, but not to much success. Rhett came back in 1998 with his third album titled What Livin's All About, but it too did not reach the success of his first album. His fourth album, titled Friday Night In Dixie, was released in March of 2002. It had moderate success with its title-track "Friday Night In Dixie". Rhett is scheduled to release his fifth album People Like Me on March 13, 2006. The album is already very anticipated because of the song "Kiss My Country Ass". This song has created controversy, and some radio stations have refused to play it.
He has also written songs that have been used by other artists, such as Little Sundress, sung by Chris Cagle, and Put a Girl In It has been a hit for Brooks & Dunn.

She's been goin' out with me
Said she'd let us know by tonight
Which one it would be
So I waited by the phone
But she never called me up
Had to know what was goin' on
So, I drove by her house and sure enough
That ain't my truck in her drive
Man this ain't my day tonight
Looks like she's in love and I'm out of luck
That ain't my shadow on her wall
Lord this don't look good at all
That's my girl my whole world
But that ain't my truck
I pulled over by the curb
I've been sittin' here all night
Wonderin' what it was I did so wrong
That he did so right
I've thought of breakin' down her door
But there's nothin' left to say
That chevy four-by-four
Says it all sittin' in my place
That ain't my truck in her drive
Man this ain't my day tonight
Looks like she's in love and I'm out of luck
That ain't my shadow on her wall
Lord this don't look good at all
That's my girl my whole world
But that ain't my truck
That ain't my shadow on her wall
Lord this don't look good at all
That's my girl my whole world
But that ain't my truck
That's my girl my whole world
But that ain't my truck
In Rhett Akins's That Ain't My Truck, the singer is eagerly waiting for his girlfriend to choose between him and another man. However, she does not call him to inform him of her decision. Therefore, he becomes confused and decides to drive to her house to check what is going on. When he arrives, the first thing he notices is that there is a truck in her drive. It turns out that the truck belongs to the other man, and this breaks the singer's heart.
Throughout the song, the singer expresses his frustration and sadness in a poignant way. He wonders what he did wrong and why she chose the other man over him. Additionally, the singer contemplates breaking down her door but decides that it is not worth it.
