Face To Face
Ria Mae Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I didn't see it coming
Just tiny thoughts and now they run your mind
They're hardly moving
Likes hands on clocks
And now I'm out of time
Slipping out of my hands
I still don't understand why you're gone
Remember when I was gold?

I know you're probably dreaming
I know you're probably dreaming babe

I never used to mind it
The highs, the lows, the friends that come and go
Only wanted to try it
Now I'm needing something so bad all the time
I let you under my skin
Oh it's like I've never been
On your mind

Remember when I was gold?

I know you're probably dreaming
I know you're probably dreaming babe

(I know you're probably dreaming)
Don't leave me here
D-don't leave me here
I'm not done with this
How do you forget?
H-how how do you forget?
Are you done with this?

Slipping out of my hands
I still don't understand why you're gone

Remember when I was gold?

I know you're probably dreaming (Remember when I was gold?)
I know you're probably dreaming babe (Remember when I was gold?)

Remember when I was gold?

Overall Meaning

In "Face to Face", Ria Mae is pondering over a lost relationship, questioning why it ended and wondering if it is possible to get it back. She is having a hard time understanding the reasons behind its failure, as she was still happy and content in the relationship. She mentions how the thoughts that ran through her partner's mind had slipped away, leaving her with a feeling of unexplained abandonment. Ria Mae talks about how she used to handle all of the highs and lows of her relationship; nevertheless, it seems like something changed, and she realized that she needed more from her partner. Throughout the song, she reminisces over the moments when her relationship was golden and perfect, seemingly striving to get it back to that point.

She expresses her need for her partner, not wanting to be left alone and left wondering whether they are still together or not. She pleads for her partner not to leave her, as she has not yet given up on the relationship, and she is not ready to throw it away yet. Although the chorus repeats the line "Remember when I was gold," it is not quite clear what it signifies. It could mean that she and her partner were golden and perfect together, or she wants her partner to remember who she was and how precious she was to him. Ultimately, Ria Mae wonders if her partner has forgotten her and their relationship entirely, as she sings, "How do you forget? H-how, how do you forget?"
