FAREWELL
Richard S. & The Vibe Tribe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Leise flehen meine Lieder
Durch die Nacht zu dir;
In den stillen Hain hernieder,
Liebchen, komm zu mir!

Flsternd schlanke Wipfel rauschen
In des Mondes Licht;
Des Verrters feindlich Lauschen
Frchte, Holde, nicht.

Hrst die Nachtigallen schlagen?
Ach! sie flehen dich,
Mit der Tne sen Klagen
Flehen sie fr mich.

Sie verstehn des Busens Sehnen,
Kennen Liebesschmerz,
Rhren mit den Silbertnen
Jedes weiche Herz.

La auch dir die Brust bewegen,
Liebchen, hre mich!

Bebend harr' ich dir entgegen!
Komm, beglcke mich!

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are a translation into German of a poem by Heinrich Heine called "Im wunderschönen Monat Mai" (In the beautiful month of May) which were then set to music by Richard Strauss in his song "Zueignung," or "Dedication." The lines "Leise flehen meine Lieder, Durch die Nacht zu dir; In den stillen Hain hernieder, Liebchen, komm zu mir!" translate to "Quietly, my songs plead with you, through the night to you; down into the silent grove, sweetheart, come to me!" This is a romantic and pleading cry for the singer's lover to come to them in the darkness and the stillness of the night, to seek solace and connection.

The imagery continues with the "whispering slender tree-tops rustling in the moonlight," a reference to the beauty of nature surrounding them and the secrets whispered between the leaves. The line "Frchte, Holde, nicht" (Do not fear, my love) is a reassurance to the lover that they need not worry about any traitors or enemies in their midst. The nightingales serve as messengers of the longing and pain felt by the singer, and they urge the lover to hear their sweet sorrowful songs and understand the depth of their feelings. The final lines express the singer's hope that their beloved will feel moved by the intensity of their love and join them, trembling with anticipation for their reunion.
