Do You Hear What I Hear?
Ricky Skaggs And Family Lyrics
Jump to: Line by Line Meaning ↴
He roamed through the west
And Johnny Yuma, the rebel
He wandered alone.
He got fightin' mad
This rebel lad
He packed no star
Where the only law
Was a hook and a draw.
The rebel, Johnny Yuma.
Johnny Yuma was a rebel
He roamed through the west
Johnny Yuma, the rebel
He wandered alone.
He searched the land
This restless lad
He was panther quick
And leather tough
'Cause he figured that
He'd been pushed enough.
The rebel, Johnny Yuma.
Johnny Yuma was a rebel
He roamed through the west
Johnny Yuma, the rebel
He wandered alone.
Fightin' mad
This rebel lad
With a dream he'd hold
'Til his dyin' breath
He'd search his soul
And gamble with death.
The rebel, Johnny Yuma.
(Away, away, away rode the rebel Johnny Yuma)
Johnny Yuma was a rebel
Johnny Yuma was an independent and non-conformist character
He roamed through the west
He traveled the western region of the country aimlessly.
And Johnny Yuma, the rebel
Johnny Yuma was a fighter who didn't obey the established rules.
He wandered alone.
He moved around without any companions.
He got fightin' mad
He became very angry and frustrated.
This rebel lad
This young person didn't conform with societal norms.
He packed no star
He didn't carry any type of gun or weapon.
As he wandered far
As he moved farther away from home.
Where the only law
In a place where no formal justice system existed.
Was a hook and a draw.
The code of conduct was survival of the fittest.
He searched the land
His constant restless energy fueled his relentless search for something.
This restless lad
This never-tiring young man.
He was panther quick
He had quick reflexes and was agile like a panther.
And leather tough
He was hardened and strong.
'Cause he figured that
Because he thought.
He'd been pushed enough.
He believed that he had been mistreated and abused for long enough.
With a dream he'd hold
He was determined to pursue and achieve his dream.
Til his dyin' breath
Until the very end of his life.
He'd search his soul
He would introspect to find purpose and fulfillment.
And gamble with death.
He would take significant risks even if it meant his life in danger.
(Away, away, away rode the rebel Johnny Yuma)
Johnny leaves the scene alone, with no one to stop him.

This is from one of the better Christmas specials I've seen in recent years. I'm not a Skaggs or bluegrass fan per se, but I stumbled across the show on CMT while flipping stations three or four years ago and stayed for the whole thing. This vid gives you a great taste of what the whole show was like -- traditional Christmas songs sung with great harmonies by the Skaggs and White families. I hope CMT will show it again soon. Thanks for posting the vid.
