memory lane
Riperton Minnie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It kinda made me laugh
It took me way back
Back down memory lane
I see the happiness... i see the pain
Where am i... back down memory lane
Such a happy happy pair
Love beyond compare
Look-a-there look-a-there
The way you held me... no one could tell me
That love would die... why oh why
Did i have to find this photograph
Thought i had forgot the past
But now I'm slippin' fast
Back down memory lane
I feel the happiness... i feel the pain
Here am i... back down memory lane
I'm in the sunshine... I'm in the rain
I don't want to go traveling down
Faster than the speed of sound
Back down memory lane
Be still my foolish heart
Don't let this feelin' start
Back down memory lane
I don't want to go... save me save me
In "Memory Lane," Riperton Minnie describes a moment where she stumbled upon a photograph, and it immediately sent her on a trip back in time, stirring up emotions related to both happiness and pain. The song is a reflection on memories, love, and the pain that comes from remembering what was had, but also lost. The line, "I see us standing there, such a happy, happy pair, love beyond compare," speaks to the joy and beauty of the past. Riperton's voice is delicate and emotive, allowing the sentimentality of the lyrics to wash over the listener.
The theme of the past is further reinforced by the repetition of the phrase "back down memory lane." At first, the singer is resistant to the memories, warning herself, "I don't want to go traveling down faster than the speed of sound." Yet, she cannot resist the pull of the past, and the song ends with a plea to be saved from the emotional turmoil she is experiencing.
Overall, "Memory Lane" is a poignant exploration of the human experience of nostalgia and the powerful emotions that can be triggered by even the smallest reminder of the past.

This video is deep. The song, on the surface, is about looking back at past memories from ones life, buts its much more than that. She is looking back at memories of her life, knowing she wouldn't be here for much longer. At the same time, it's almost like she's seeing into the future, looking through our eyes. She knew that one day, her loved ones/descendents and the world (us) would look back at her life, her works and her legacy with fondness, sadness, happiness, and gratitude. Her pleading for more life at the end is heartbreaking and reminds us that our lives here are fleeting. Thank you Minnie, for sharing your voice and your light with us. Wherever you are, I hope you are at peace.

Seeing this video as an adult, and understanding what she was going through at this time gives this song an entirely new context for me. God bless your resting soul, Minnie.
