two of us

Spending someone's hard earned pay
You and me Sunday driving
Not arriving on our way back home
We're on our way home
We're going home
Two of us spending postcards
You and me burning matches
Lifting latches on our way back home
We're on our way home
We're going home
You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches
Out ahead
Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing so low in the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere on our way back home
We're on our way home
We're going home
In the song "Two of Us," Rita Connolly sings about the experience of two people traveling together without a specific destination in mind. The first verse describes two people "riding nowhere" and spending "someone's hard earned pay" while enjoying a leisurely drive on a Sunday. The chorus repeats the phrase "We're on our way home" to suggest that even without a specific plan or destination, the journey itself is enough.
The second verse describes the pair writing postcards and letters and burning matches. These actions suggest a sense of spontaneity and a lack of obligation, which contrasts with the idea of "getting nowhere" when chasing paper. The third verse speaks to the long history of the two people, implying that their memories together are longer than any physical distance ahead of them. The final two lines of the song, "We're on our way home / We're going home," repeat the same idea as before – that the journey is more important than the destination and that the two people's partnership is what matters most.
Overall, Rita Connolly's "Two of Us" is a song about the simple pleasures of traveling with a loved one. The themes of spontaneity, companionship, and the journey being more important than the destination make it a timeless piece that can be appreciated by anyone who has ever enjoyed a road trip with someone special.
