Walking on Ice
River City People Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I walk on ice
I play with fire
For loving you, baby
I dance on wire
Oh I can't sleep at night
Loving you I pay that price
Loving you is like walking on ice
Who broke you down
Who's there to blame
Who tore you up inside
And left the pain
Oh, someone burned your life
And everyday I pay that price
Everyday I'm walking on ice

Time after time I wake up and find
I want you, I'm calling
Like always I'm falling on ice
Walking on ice

I can't blink an eye

Loving you I pay that price
Loving you is like walking on ice

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Walking On Ice" by River City People convey the idea of being in a risky, precarious situation because of the intense passion and love one feels for someone. The first verse states that the singer is willing to take risks, walk on thin ice and play with fire just to experience the thrill of loving this person. She knows that it's dangerous, yet the pulling force of love compels her to keep going. The second verse implies that the person she is in love with has been hurt before, and the singer is willing to pay the price of the pain that the person is in, just to be with them. The chorus is repeated twice, emphasizing the point that loving someone is akin to walking on ice, and every day feels like a dangerous balancing act, which requires a lot of energy and attention.

The repetition of the phrase, "walking on ice" in the chorus suggests that the singer is aware that she is taking a significant risk. The metaphor of walking on thin ice highlights the idea that love can be dangerous, and one misstep can lead to an unexpected disaster. The lyrics, "I can't sleep at night / Loving you I pay that price" reveal that it's difficult to let go of the intensity of the love, even if it leads to emotional turmoil or inner turmoil. The last line, "I can't blink an eye / Loving you I pay that price" suggests that the singer is so vulnerable to the situation that even blinking her eye could make her lose her balance.

You say he's leaving
I say he isn't sure
The heart you left behind
Is bleeding
And he can't feel no more
He says he loves you
And you can't see it's true
And one day, you wake up
No one can make you face the truth

I've been walking on ice
Someday on the railways
Someday, some night
Somebody's gonna find me

You say I'm dreaming
But I feel wound away
And he's convinced
You don't believe him
Don't people make the strangest of mistakes?

And he says he loves you
Can't you see it's true?

I've been walking on ice
Someday on the railways
Someday, some night
Somebody's gonna find me

I've been walking on iceSomeday on the railwaysSomeday, some nightSomebody's gonna find meYou say he isn't faithfulBut I was with himEvery secondIt's clear to meIt's you he cares forYou're always firstTo no one secondAnd he says he loves youCan't you see it's true? And one day, you wake upNo one, no one can make you face the truthI've been walking on iceSomeday on the railwaysSomeday, some nightSomebody's gonna find me, find meI've been walking on iceSomeday on the railwaysSomeday, some nightSomebody's gonna find me, find meI've been walking on iceSomeday on the railwaysSomeday, some nightSomebody's gonna find me, find meI've been walking on ice...

River City People were one of my favourite bands - absolutely loved them. This track is one of my favourites - so sad they didn't hit the big time but made 2 crackin' albums. Met the group in Bradford at HMV where they were playing a few tracks live - really lovely people, they gave me a ticket for their gig that night supporting OMD. Fantastic. Hope they're all doing well x

I interviewed Tim in his studio, "Elevator," 2015 tall laid back fellow. Q: "Why did you name studio Elevator?" A: Studio is on 2nd floor and we don't have an Elevator."
The Kennedy who singer married is the son of Jerry Kennedy a guitarist, producer, record executive, he was one of the guitarists playing the opening riff to Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman.

80s Music

OMD used to be my favourite band for years ( now the concept seems so redundant) and I was thrilled when Sailing on the Seven Seas was a comeback hit in 1991 after the split of 1988. I think OMD toured in 1991 so this must have been when RCP supported them. Siobhan Maher is in Nashville married to top producer Ray Kennedy and Tim Speed was involved in music production in Liverpool in recent years. I am listening to Say Something Good as I type and it is so good. It tugs on the heartstrings because of the brooding quality of the music ( a sense of foreboding reminiscent of some of the Eurythmics' work), nostalgia for a time that is so long ago and will never be repeated and the sadness I always feel that they did not make it big as they deserved to. California Dreaming is great and seemed to herald a promising career for RCP but it stalled. There is a depth to the band's music that the casual listener in the hot summer of 1990 would have missed, more's the pity.

Un gran tema y con tan pocas visualizaciones, sera que la gente no se acuerda o realmente no la conocen. Un gran tema de principio de los 90 (1990).
