People Will Say We're In Love
Robert Palmer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why do the neighbors chatter all day, behind their doors?
I know a way to prove what they say is quite untrue.
Here is the gist, a practical list of "donts" for you.
Don't throw bouquets at me
Don't please my folks too much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much
Don't sigh and gaze at me
Your sighs are so like mine
Your eyes mustn't glow like mine
People will say we're in love!
Don't start collecting things
Give me my rose and my glove.
Sweetheart they're suspecting things
People will say we're in love.
Don't praise my charm too much
Don't look so vain with me
Don't stand in the rain with me
People will say we're in love!
Don't take my arm too much
Don't keep your hand in mine
Your hand feels so grand in mine
People will say we're in love!
Don't dance all night with me
Till the stars fade from above.
They'll see it's alright with me
People will say we're in love.
The Robert Palmer song "People Will Say We're in Love" is a classic love duet that expresses the fear of the two lovers being perceived as falling for each other. The song is from the musical "Oklahoma!" and was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The song's lyrics speak of the paranoia that can come with feelings of love, as the two protagonists fear that their neighbors and friends will think that they are in love.
The song begins with the singer who is confused about why people are linking his name with his lover's. They cannot understand why their neighbors chatter all day behind their doors. The singer then goes on to provide a list of "dont's" that his lover should follow to prove that what people are saying is untrue. These include not throwing bouquets at him, not laughing too much, and not gazing or sighing too much.
The song's chorus repeats the words "People will say we're in love" and expresses the fear that the two lovers have about being perceived as in love. They worry about other people's opinions, which can be debilitating and keep them from expressing their true feelings. However, the song's final verse provides a glimmer of hope as the singer explains that they will dance all night together until the stars fade away. At that point, they do not care what other people think because they are, in fact, in love.
