Out of Control
Rolling Stones - Bridges To B Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was out in the city
I was out in the rain
I was feeling down hearted
I was drinking again

I was standing by the bridges
Where the dark water flows
I was talking to a stranger
About times long ago

I was young
I was foolish
I was angry
I was vain
I was charming
I was lucky
Tell me how have I changed

Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Oh help me now

And the girls in the doorway
And the boys in the game
And the drunks and the homeless
They all know me

And the police on the corner
Give a nod and a wave
As they point me
To my final destination

I was young
I was foolish
I was angry
I was vain
I was charming
Feeling lucky
Tell me how have I changed

Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Oh help me now

In the hotel I'm excited
By the smile on her face
But I wondered
How was time
Gonna change her

I was young
I was foolish
I was angry
I was vain
I was charming
I was out there
Tell me how have I changed

Now I'm out
Oh out of control

Oh I'm out
Oh out of control

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Out of Control" by the Rolling Stones paint a vivid picture of a person's journey through life, reflecting on their past and present state of being. The singer describes being out in the city and feeling disheartened, seeking solace in alcohol as they stand by the bridges where dark waters flow. Engaging in conversation with a stranger about times long ago, they confront their younger self - foolish, angry, and vain yet charming and lucky. The question posed, "Tell me how have I changed," reveals a deep introspection and desire for self-understanding.

As the song progresses, the singer acknowledges their current state of being "out of control," surrounded by a mix of individuals who know them - from girls in doorways to boys in the game, drunks, and the homeless. Even the police, symbolizing authority, acknowledge their presence as they are directed towards what seems like an inevitable fate. The repetition of the singer's past traits highlights a sense of continuity despite the passage of time, leading to the central theme of self-reflection and uncertainty about personal evolution.

The setting shifts to a hotel, where the singer is intrigued by someone's smile but ponders how time will change their dynamic. The hindsight of youth's folly and vanity is juxtaposed with the singer's current state of being "out of control," hinting at a struggle with their own identity and behavior. The repeated plea for help underscores a sense of desperation and vulnerability, as the singer grapples with their past choices and the unpredictable nature of change.

Overall, "Out of Control" delves into the complexities of personal growth and introspection, exploring themes of identity, regret, and acceptance. The lyrics weave a narrative of reckoning with one's past self while navigating an uncertain present, captured through vivid imagery and raw, introspective storytelling. The plea for help and acknowledgment of being "out of control" serve as a poignant reminder of the human experience's turbulent and transformative nature, encapsulating the universal struggle for self-awareness and realization.

The Glimmer Twins - Keef and Mick on Blues harp, menacingly meeting center stage in a traditional dramatic duel, is classic Stones.
