Lollipop
Ronald & Ruby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop.....

Call my baby lollipop
Tell you why
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie
And when he does his shaky rockin' dance
Man, I haven't got a chance

I call him
Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop.....

Sweeter than candy on a stick
Huckleberry, cherry or lime
If you had a chance
He'd be your pick
But lollipop is mine

Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop.....

Crazy way he thrills me
Tell you why
Just like a lightning from the sky
He loves to kiss me till I can't see straight
GEE, MY LOLLIPOP IS GREAT

I call him
Lollipop lollipop

Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop.....

Clearly the "pop" sound is what made the Chordette's version a huge success

Jason Robinson

It's slightly infuriating not hearing it lol

Beverly Ross (Ruby) was 19 and Ronald Gumm was 13. He was also black, so there was little chance of them performing the song live, being interracial.
She had to use the pseudonym of Ruby also for safety reasons because of the interracial aspects of the duo.

Richard Young

That is soooo sad! Just because Ronald was black. Shameful for the times.

According to Arnold Shaw in his book, "The Rockin' '50s", he took this song that he was involved in and tried to rush-release it ahead of the Chordettes' version; The Chordettes under Archie Bleyer and their record company, Cadence,  beat him to the charts and the rest is history.

RUDYNATACHA

This version is just as good as the Chordettes' version. In a way I like it better.

TheEnnaSite

I like this one better. Its raw, twangy and just feels right. The chordettes were too polished. I like how when ronald and ruby say the last pop in they chorus they have to wait for the echo to stop. Before they continue. Which had to be written iin to the music to make it work. This gets lost when the chordettes sing it and so It just sounds awkward.

Apparently no one commenting here about the song seems to think the same as you.
