Lock and Key
Rose Cousins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I am a thief and you keep giving to my greed
You're the water to my thirsty seed
I am the lock and you are the key
I am my own worst enemy
Somehow you stand alone and you fight for me
Love is the cure and the disease
Always there to break my fall
Push me from the highest wall
Still it all makes sense to me
I wait until you call
You're the best and worst of all
Without you, where would I be
We are lock and key
I know sometimes it's hard to see
That I'm for you and you were meant for me
But you're the only one who ever set me free
I am the lock and you are the key
Always there to break my fall
Push me from the highest wall
Still it all makes sense to me
I wait until you call
You're the best and worst of all
Without you, where would I be
I pushed you away and now you're all I need
We are lock and key

In "Lock and Key," Rose Cousins explores the dynamics of a complicated and intense relationship. The lyrics describe a deep emotional connection between two people who are seemingly opposites but complement each other perfectly.
The opening lines - "I spilled my heart, you watched me bleed, I am a thief and you keep giving to my greed" - suggest vulnerability and openness on the part of the singer. They have revealed their deepest emotions, and the other person has witnessed this rawness. The reference to being a thief could imply that the singer constantly takes from the other person without consequence, highlighting their selfishness.
The next lines - "You're the water to my thirsty seed, I am the lock and you are the key" - convey a sense of balance and interdependence. The other person is the provider of what the singer needs to grow and flourish, like water to a seed. The metaphor of being a lock and the other person being the key represents their connection as being essential and inseparable, as though they were made for each other.
The chorus continues to explore the complexity of this relationship. The singer acknowledges their own flaws - "I am my own worst enemy" - highlighting their self-destructive tendencies. However, the other person remains steadfast and fights for them, recognizing the power of love to simultaneously heal and harm. The repetition of "We are lock and key" reinforces their intertwined nature, acknowledging that they are bound to each other in both positive and challenging ways.
The subsequent verses reflect on the unwavering support the other person offers. They are always there to catch the singer's fall and push them forward, even from the highest points of vulnerability. The singer admits that even though their actions may seem confusing, it all makes sense to them. They eagerly await the other person's call, recognizing their importance in their life.
The bridge highlights the singer's awareness of the preciousness of their relationship. They may have pushed the other person away in the past, but now they realize that this person is the one they truly need. The repetition of "Lock and key" in the final lines reinforces the theme of interconnectedness and the essential nature of their bond.
Overall, "Lock and Key" delves into the contradictions and complexities of a deep connection. It explores themes of vulnerability, interdependence, and the power of love to both heal and harm. Through vivid metaphors and introspective lyrics, Rose Cousins provides a poignant exploration of a relationship that is simultaneously challenging and enriching.
