Miles To Go
Rose Cousins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We've been driving this main state
For what seems like hours
The cars and our blood thick and slow
Trading miles for inches and we've got miles to go
And heavy loads

And I can see the clouds changing in the mirror behind
And my moods are the weather they change with the sky
But god how it feels to get up and fly
It's been coming for all this year

Then it's the film screen
Blue greens
Thunder and lightning movie scene

What amazes me the most
Is that we've come so close
And then it all comes undone
Then it all comes undone

And I'm making things harder in my usual way
And I'm growing through stages and mistakes I've made
But there's pages and pages of things I can't seem to say
And I know that I should come clean
Somewhere in between
The thunder and lightning

What amazes me the most
Is my fear of the ghosts
And then it all comes undone
Then it all comes undone

I don't know exactly what it's about
But I know it's been at least three times now
All the shit I put you through
Was relentless and useless
And my solution is I'm no good for you

And we're still driving this main state
And our state of driving
The cars and our blood thick and slow
Trading smiles and pinches and we've got miles to go
Miles to go
And miles to go

Miles to go
Miles to go

Overall Meaning

The song "Miles To Go" by Rose Cousins talks about a journey, possibly a long road trip, that represents the journey of life. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, describing the main state and how they've been driving for hours, and they have a long way to go. The cars and their blood are thick and slow, which could symbolize the pace of life or the weight of their burdens. The line "trading miles for inches" could mean that they feel like they're making progress, but it's slow and incremental, and they still have a long way to go. They also have "heavy loads," suggesting that they're carrying emotional baggage, perhaps from previous experiences.

The singer's mood changes with the sky, which could imply that they're struggling with their emotions or mental health. However, the line "god how it feels to get up and fly" suggests that they're striving for freedom and liberation. The thunder and lightning movie scene could represent a sudden change or chaos in their life, and they're amazed at how close they've come to their goal, but then everything falls apart. The line "Somewhere in between the thunder and lightning" could mean that the singer is trying to find a balance between the chaos and calmness in their life.

The chorus talks about the singer's fear of ghosts, which could be interpreted as their fear of the past or their own mistakes. They admit that they've put their loved ones through a lot and that they're no good for them. Despite that, they're still on the road, trying to keep moving forward, but they know they have miles to go.

This is fabulous songwriting. Great romantic imagery. The studio version on her "If You Were For Me" CD has an even more classic timeless quality with beautiful piano accompaniment. Lovely intimate quality to Rose's voice and expression. One of her best. Sucks me in every time.
