After You've Gone
Rufus Wainwright feat. Lorna Luft Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone, there's no denyin'
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad
You'll miss the bestest pal ya ever had

There'll come a time when you'll regret it
There'll come a time, now don't forget it
Oh, baby, think what you're doin'
My love for you is gonna drive you to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away

[Lorna Luft]
After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone, there's no denyin'
You're gonna feel blue, and
You're gonna feel sad, you're gonna feel bad
And you'll miss, and you'll miss
And you'll miss the bestest pal ya ever had

[Wainwright & Luft]
There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Oh, baby, think what you're doin'
I'm gonna haunt you so, I'm gonna taunt you so

It's gonna drive you to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away

Overall Meaning

Rufus Wainwright's song, "After You're Gone," is a poignant and melancholy expression of a lover's regret and despair after being abandoned. The song begins with the singer acknowledging the empty place left behind by his lover's departure, acknowledging that the lover will also eventually feel the sadness and regret of their decision. The singer warns his lover not to forget the love they shared on a whim, as he predicts that his love for them will ultimately drive them to ruin.

The lyrics describe the aftermath of a passionate love affair, portraying the singer's grief as a consequence of being left behind after the lover has "gone away." The lyrics suggest that the lover may come to regret their decision, as the singer tells them that they will "miss the bestest pal ya ever had" and "feel blue" after leaving. In a sense, the song is about the transience of love and the fear of abandonment, expressed through the pain of separation and the emotional devastation it causes.

In the end, however, the song is both a lament for what has been lost and a warning to the lover who has left, as the singer warns them that their decision may ultimately be their downfall. Through its poignant lyrics and haunting melody, "After You're Gone" expresses the universal experience of loss and the heartache that accompanies it.

Oh my God I wish I was there! It makes me so mad that I live in New York and still couldn't go! The video wasn't too close, but just to hear it was fabulous! I can't wait until this DVD comes out!

I was at the show and it was great fun - I much prefer Rufus singing his own songs (or Leonard Cohen's) but it was a wonderful night and I sat two seats from David Bowie!! Seems many travelled from the UK for that night.
