Although their earlier releases contained Satanic themes and imagery, from the third album on, the band's primary subject matter centered around pirates, sailing and other historical events. In 1987, the band released the album Under Jolly Roger, which was a switch to pirate-based and historical themes, creating and influencing the later named pirate metal subgenre of heavy metal in the 2000s in the process. While the historical lyrics were very superficial at first, the lyrics for later albums were intensively researched, by frontman Rolf Kasparek in particular.
After this album, from 1988 to 1992 (for the albums Port Royal, Death or Glory, Blazon Stone and Pile of Skulls), Running Wild mainly wrote historically based lyrics. In addition to lyrics about pirates, the band also addressed subjects like the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo, or the colonization of the New World by the Conquistadors.
In April 2009, Kasparek announced that Running Wild had split up. Their intended last show was at Wacken Open Air in July that year. It was recorded for CD and DVD release and appeared as The Final Jolly Roger in 2011. The split would prove temporary as they reunited in 2012. Running Wild played live for the Wacken Open Air festival in 2015. As of 2021, the band have released 17 studio albums, with their most recent being Blood on Blood.

Beggar's Night
Running Wild Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The poor stand up and fight
Marquises, kings and all this vermin
Hunted up in burning streets
Fight, fight, fight with rage
Their menials are locked up in cage
The spirit of the rebel lives
Determined to break free
We stand up to break our chains
Rulers beware
We'll give you suffer and pain
On beggar's night
Riot terminates our pain
We'll catch you in your air
You have to pay for your blame
On beggar's night
Sin, sin, whip and chain
That's the way they lived and reigned
Too many people died in their dungeon
Now pain's too hard if it's for their profit
Beast, beast, go away
No reason why you have to stay
The wealth you squeezed out of our lives
Will become your tomb
We stand up to break our chains
Rulers beware
We'll give you suffer and pain
On beggar's night
Riot terminates our pain
We'll catch you in your air
You have to pay for your blame
On beggar's night
The song "Beggar's Night" by Running Wild paints a vivid picture of a rebellion against oppressive rulers who have inflicted pain and suffering upon the common people for too long. The lyrics describe a bloody night where the poor finally take a stand against the marquises, kings, and other members of the ruling class who have been hunting them down in the streets. The rebels are determined to break free and fight for their liberation. They have reached their limits with the rulers and their menials, and they are ready to make them pay for their wrongdoings. The lyrics speak of the rebel spirit that is alive and well, and the chains that have long held the people in bondage are about to break.
The lyrics also describe the pain and suffering the people have endured at the hands of their rulers. They have been subjected to whips and chains, imprisoned in dungeons, and forced to live in poverty while their rulers grew rich off of their suffering. The lyrics suggest that the rulers will face the consequences of their actions on beggar's night, when the rebels will rise up and overthrow them.
In conclusion, "Beggar's Night" is a powerful song that speaks to the desire for freedom and the fight against oppression. It is a call to action for all those who have been subjected to inhumane treatment at the hands of their rulers.
