Born Again
Russ Taff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you or don't you want this to be your song?
It doesn't take a rebel to sing along
This art is weak in its pretty, pretty frame
And I'm your monkey with a misspelled name

"I'll put down your disco
And take your heart away
I'll put down your disco
And take your heart away"
I'll be born again

I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you
I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you

Do you don't you want to take this hit
Does it make you feel like a part of "it"
"And I'll put down your disco
And take your heart away
I'll put down your disco
And take your heart away"
I'll be born again

I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you
I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you
I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you
I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you

The valley of the dolls
Is the valley of the dead
The valley of the dolls
Is the valley of the dead

I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you
I'm someone else, I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid, just like you
"I'll put down your disco
And take your heart away
I'll put down your disco
And take your heart away"
I'll be born again
I'll be born again

I'll be born again
I'll be born again

Overall Meaning

The song "Born Again" by Russ Taff is an intense commentary on the emptiness of pop culture and a longing for a deeper spiritual significance. The lyrics speak to the listener by asking, "Do you or don't you want this to be your song?" which is a question that challenges the listener's willingness to participate in a culture that might be seen as superficial or meaningless. The singer goes on to provide an unflattering portrait of the art, "This art is weak in its pretty, pretty frame," and admits to fulfilling the role of a performer by declaring, "I'm your monkey with a misspelled name."

The chorus, "I'll put down your disco and take your heart away, I'll be born again," is a powerful proclamation of the singer's desire to break free from the shallow and meaningless aspects of popular culture in order to rediscover himself and find true spiritual fulfillment. The bridge lines "I'm someone else, I'm someone new, I'm someone stupid, just like you," suggest that a life of spiritual emptiness is one of ignorance and foolishness, and that everyone is equally susceptible to it.

Overall, "Born Again" is a song that encourages the listener to take a critical look at the culture they participate in and to realize that there is a need for spiritual growth and renewal. It is a passionate plea to move beyond superficiality and find something deeper.

I’m 52. When I was 12 or 13, I played drums for Russ when he came to our church in Evansville, IN. This was shortly after he left the Imperials. He’s always been my favorite gospel performer. When he sings he’s transformed… He goes to another place. In that moment in time, he’s not really Russ. It’s an amazing experience each and every time I watch him perform.
