midnight
Russell T. Davies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad

Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Russell T. Davies's song "Midnight" express an overwhelming sense of sadness and longing that often arises during the nocturnal hour of midnight. The song begins by setting the stage for the emotions that follow with the line "It begins to tell, round midnight, midnight." Here, the singer acknowledges that the feeling of melancholy tends to surface at this particular time of night.

As the song progresses, the singer delves deeper into their feelings, revealing that they do pretty well during the day until suppertime, where they begin to feel sad. However, things really take a turn for the worse as the night progresses, especially when memories of a lost love start to surface. The lyrics reflect the singer's struggle with reconciling their love for someone who is no longer around, and the difficulty of moving on from the heartbreak.

The chorus of the song expresses a hope that their love will be rekindled, with the singer asking for the return of their loved one: "Let our hearts take wings, 'round midnight, midnight, let the angels sing, for your returning." The repeated line "round, round, round midnight" emphasizes the cyclical nature of these emotions, as they seem to return again and again at this time of night.

Another way to look at this is; To know what it is, he needs to work with something that the creature gives and it has to confirm what he suggests it is.

All he knows about it is what it showed in this episode of what it did and given how big the Universe is and the amount of life forms and higher consciousness that exist.

It can easily be more then a billion different things, but the Doctor would have no way of verifying it, even with the Tardis. And looking at his reaction, He doesn't want to.

This experience is an outlier for the Doctor and what he does and stands for, and he chooses to not do his usual thing of investigating it further. Because he's too fearful of what the repercussions would be for the Universe if he does.

It's such a brilliant moment when the doctor asks what the hostesses name was, and everyone doesn't know, the score and the acting was brilliant

@B.N.G-54 she is forever "The hostess. the first the original. any other after are merely copies"

@Dorgesh it was more the fact that she had sacrificed her life to save them and none of them had even bothered to ask her name.

Dorgesh

I thought that, but tbf he could've asked the other staff at the leisure palace who she was

@Bailey Aston Yes absolutely, like he's finally admitting it

I love the way it's the Professor that says "I don't know", as it's the first thing he "hasn't known" during the entire episode...

Its a pity the doctor never got to thank the hostess for her sacrifise. She sacrificed herself for a bunch of scared and selfish people. Its really sad.

@Bucketheadhead Years later but you are absolutely right.

I was recently rewatching this episode and thought that their decision to throw her out is the absolute correct one both with or without the Doctor being there. This is with hindsight though.

His curiosity killed an additional person, though I'd argue that the entity itself amplified personalty traits through unknown means, it seemed to be able to function on a metaphysical level since it 'breached' into a mind.

Great example of cosmic horror though.

The Doctor does think about the hostess when Davros lectures him about sacrifice in Journey's End, so clearly she had an impact on Ten.

He was so sad no one knew her name! It just makes you think about interactions you have w fellow humans as you walk this planet. We are all neighbors.
