Why Don't You Do Right
Ruth Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You had plenty money, Nineteen-Twenty-Two
You let other women make a fool of you
Why don't you do right like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

You're sittin' down wonderin' what it's all about
You ain't got no money, they will put you out
Why don't you do right like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

If you had prepared twenty years ago
You wouldn't be wanderin' now from door to door
Why don't you do right like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

I fell for your jivin' and I took you in
Now all you got to offer me's a drink of gin
Why don't you do right like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

Why don't you do right like some other men do?
Like some other men do

Overall Meaning

In Ruth Brown's song Why Don't You Do Right, the woman singer is expressing her dissatisfaction and disappointment in her man's behavior. She begins by addressing his past success and financial stability, but how that has all gone to waste as he's allowed other women to take advantage of him. She urges him to start being responsible and earn some money, like other men do. She's not going to settle for his excuses and wants him to step up and provide for her as he should.

The woman's frustration and disappointment continue to build as she lays out the consequences of his poor choices. He's sitting around with no money, risking being put out, and she's not having it. She questions why he's not doing what other men do, and tells him to leave and go get some money. If he had only prepared for his future earlier, he wouldn't be struggling now, and she wouldn't be in this position. She blames him for leading her on and now only offering her a drink of gin.
