Northern Lights
Ryan O'Reilly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the last days before the end
Of summer then the snow descends
She lead me through her town to see the opera
I pictured all of the places I could go with her
I′ve never seen
The Northern Lights
Or a sun
That won't set at night
We drank the wine upon your shelf
I tried behaving myself
Maybe you thought that you could
Hold me responsible
But then you realized that that′s
Not even possible
I've never seen
The Northern Lights
Or a sun
That won't set at night
You told me how your scar was made
At that my car was now snowed in
You sort of laughed at the attempts I made
And took your medicine and gin
The winter sun′s
Low shadow casts
Across the harbour
And empty masts
The Viking ghosts
The frozen trees
And the empty streets she walked with me

You showed me where the bomb went off
And the way you walked to school
Through the forest where you used live
Where the winters are so cruel
I′ve never seen
The Northern Lights
Or a sun
That won't set at night
You never knew
And I′m not sure

If I don't belong
Here anymore

Overall Meaning

Ryan O'Reilly's song "Northern Lights" describes a bittersweet relationship that took place over the course of a winter in a small northern town. The lyrics are full of vivid imagery that evoke the feeling of being lost in time and space. With lines like "The Viking ghosts, the frozen trees, and the empty streets she walked with me" and "the winter sun's low shadow casts across the harbor and empty masts," the song creates a sense of melancholy, but also a glimmer of hope.

The song tells the story of the singer being led through the town to see the opera by a woman who he is clearly smitten with. He has never seen the Northern Lights or a sun that doesn't set at night, but he imagines all of the places he could go with this woman. They drink wine, he tries to behave himself, and they have a conversation about how she got her scar. The woman laughs at the singer's attempts to break the ice, but there is a sense of intimacy that is developing between them. The song ends with the singer unsure if he belongs in this town or in this relationship anymore.
