STREET of SOUND Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold empty bed, springs hard as lead
Pains in my head, feel like old Ned
What did I do to be so black and blue?

No joys for me, no company
Even the mouse ran from my house
All my life through I've been so black and blue
I'm white inside, but that don't help my case
Cause I can't hide what is on my face
I'm so forlorn. Life's just a thorn
My heart is torn. Why was I born?
What did I do to be so black and blue?

I'm hurt inside, but that don't help my case
Cause I can't hide what is on my face
How will it end? Ain't got a friend
My only sin is in my skin
What did I do to be so black and blue?
Tell me, what did I do?
What did I do? What did I do?
What did I do? What did I do?
What did I do? What did I do?

What did I do? Tell me, what did I do to be so black and blue?
What did I do to be so black and blue?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Street of Sound's song "Blues in 2-3" describe the feelings of a person who is struggling with depression and discrimination based on the color of their skin. The verse talks about being in a cold, empty bed with painful thoughts in the mind, feeling isolated and lonely, and asking the question, "What did I do to be so black and blue?" The phrase "black and blue" here is used figuratively to express the emotional and mental pain rather than the literal sense of being beaten up.

The next verse describes how the person has never received any joys or company in life, and even the mouse ran away from their house. The phrase "I'm white inside, but that don't help my case" means that though the person's personality or character may be good, it does not matter in a society that judges people based on the color of their skin. They feel forlorn and their heart is torn, questioning why they were even born. The repeated question "What did I do?" reflects the deep search for an answer to why they are going through such difficulties.

The song gives a poignant insight into the social and emotional struggles of being a person of color in a racially prejudiced society. It is a commentary on the ongoing battle for racial equality and the impact it has on an individual's mental health. The lyrics touch upon the themes of loneliness, despair, discrimination, and yearning for acceptance and understanding.

Lyrics:

The smokestack spitting black soot into the sunny sky
The load on the road brings a tear to the Indian's eye
The elephant won't forget what it's like inside his cage
The ringmaster's telecaster sings on an empty stage
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh
The girl with the curls
And the sweet pink ribbon in her hair
She's crawling out her window
'Cause her daddy, he just don't care, come on
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh
The clown with the frown
Driving down to the sidewalk fair
Finger on the trigger
Let me tell you, gave us quite a scare
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh
The kids flip their lids
When their ids hear that crazy sound
My neighbor digs the flavor
Still, he's moving to another town
And I don't believe he'll come back
Goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh
Well, I don't know
How you take in all the shit you see
No, don't believe anyone
And most of all don't believe me
Believe you
Goddamn right it's a beautiful day (believe you)
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh
Goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh, goddamn right it's a beautiful day
Uh-huh

This song is forever linked to 9/11 for me because I was listening to it on repeat on my way to work that day. It was such a beautiful, blue sky day that this song seemed appropriate so I sang along to it all the way to my job that day and when I arrived everyone was in the parking lot crying and looking shell shocked and I had no idea what was going on. I remember someone asking me had I not been listening to the news. I went inside about one minute before the second plane hit which I saw because the television was on CNN still. Everything went from blue sky, beautiful September day to our world being changed forever. We sat there all day long watching the news reports ( I'm a hairstylist, so this was a salon) and being amazed when anyone actually came in for a service because this had become a day of national mourning. Such an awful day forever, forever linked to such an innocent song and yet everyone that ever speaks of that day remembers what a beautiful day it started out as. The most goddamned beautiful day.

This is the best comment I have read in my life.

The singer's cousin died in the plane that hit the Pentagon.
And the singer's father had previously worked in the Pentagon on the side that was hit by the plane.
Everett mentions in his autobiography that he wondered whether the plane hit his father's old office.

Jesus more important things have happened other than 11th September 2001. You Americans need to get over yourselves and your own sense of self importance. Who fucking cares.
