Chicago rapper/producer Saba first caught the attention of listeners as a frequent collaborator of Chance the Rapper. Saba's contributions to Chance songs like 2013's "Everybody's Something" and 2015's "Angels" showcased his range as both a rapper and vocalist and paved the way for his introspective debut studio album, Bucket List Project, in 2016. The loss of a close family member inspired 2018's Care for Me, a tragically beautiful album that explored death, mourning, and life after losing a loved one.
Saba (Tahj Malik Chandler) grew up on the West Side of Chicago, specifically within the Austin neighborhood, as part of a deeply musical family. That's also where he formed Pivot Gang, a group of longtime associates that has featured, among others, his brother Jerrel (aka Joseph Chilliams), cousin Walter Long (aka John Walt), Logan Yutters (aka MFn Melo), Frsh Waters, and DJ Damnage. Saba recorded several solo mixtapes -- his first were issued while he was an introverted high-schooler -- and gained traction with ComfortZone, a 2014 release inspired by his father's neo-soul recordings that capitalized on his contributions to awareness-raising tracks by fellow Chicagoans Chance the Rapper and Mick Jenkins. In 2015, Saba appeared as featured artist on several cuts, including Chance's "Angels," Jenkins' "Slumber," and Odd Couple's "What Kings Do." Additionally, he released the reflective Tink collaboration "Temporary," one of his most commercial songs to date.
In late 2016, Saba self-released the LP Bucket List Project, featuring artists like fellow Chicagoan rappers Noname and Twista. In February of 2017, Saba's cousin, mentor, and Pivot Gang collaborator Walter Long was violently murdered by a stranger. Saba reflected on the scars left by this horrible loss throughout his second album, CARE FOR ME, which was released in April of 2018. The vulnerable and emotionally complex album broke through with critics and took Saba's music to new audiences. He followed in November of that year with "Beautiful Smile," a collaborative single with Maryland rapper IDK.

Get a little closer repeat
Bus driver pass me up, don't see me
Paramedic talk about what he need
He need his oxygen
They say I'm incompetent
I see the consequence
I walk when I can't hear them they ain't audible
Forensics search for follicle
I promise y'all I'm not a ghost
I promise y'all
Look, there's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven, heaven, heaven
No I can't your pain
But I can see the stars
No I ain't leave in vain
But I know we with God
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around
No I can't your pain
But I can see the stars
No I ain't leave in vain
But I know we with God
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven
Yelling at my brothers like "I know that I'm here"
Regardless how loud they don't hear
Walking through the crowd they share tears
I know I did not disappear
Uphill I'm battlin'
I see the cameraman
I see the new stations truck parked outside
It's every channel here
Yeah, interview, interview, interview, cut
Someone just bet out because they got (What!)
Chalk outline look like the shape of my shadow
Can't go right through the wall if I try touch
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven, heaven, heaven
No I can't your pain
But I can see the stars
No I ain't leave in vain
But I know we with God
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around
No I can't your pain
But I can see the stars
No I ain't leave in vain
But I know we with God
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven all around me
There's heaven
Saba's song Heaven All Around Me explores themes of mortality, grief, and spirituality. The opening lines mention yelling at his mother and the frustration of feeling unseen by a bus driver. These moments are followed by a paramedic needing oxygen, which creates a sense of urgency and potential danger. Saba then experiences a disconnect from his surroundings and feels like he is walking disjointedly through the world.
The first verse ends with an assertion that he exists and is not a ghost, which leads into the chorus. Saba emphasizes that despite the struggles he faces, there is "heaven all around" him. He acknowledges that he cannot take away anyone's pain but sees beauty in the stars above and takes comfort in the idea that he is not leaving this life in vain.
The second verse is more introspective than the first, with Saba questioning his own significance and presence in the world. He notes that he is unheard by his own brothers and battles uphill, but is surrounded by media coverage and attention after his death. The chorus is repeated with slight variation, with Saba asserting again that there is "heaven all around" him and that he is not leaving this world in vain.
The song ultimately speaks to the idea that even in times of great pain or confusion, there is something greater at play that can provide comfort and meaning. The repeated chorus emphasizes the idea that there is a sense of transcendence in the world around us that is available to anyone who looks for it.

Holy shit. This moved me, and it moved me to tears in such a profound way.
I don't know if it's because I've lost my brother and I'm projecting, or if it's Saba's incredible delivery and production, but I am genuinely touched.
I guess I wanted to say that Saba is a brilliant artist, 'Care For Me' is a masterpiece of an album, and I hope that this has helped him cope.

Hugs. Lost my Lil bro too
