Her father was pop guitarist Joe Brown and her mother was a popular backing singer Vicki Brown. She appeared as singer with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and in 1977 she was a backing singer on the Small Faces' final album In the Shade. Later, together with her mother as The Lillettes, she was a backing singer on Steve Marriott's Packet of Three: Live.
She recorded her debut album Stop! with her guitarist brother Pete Brown as producer. In 1988 the single "Stop" was released and almost a year later it topped the charts in Holland and Germany, reached number four in the U.K. charts; the album did likewise and went on to sell 2.5 million worldwide. Despite more chart singles, the follow-up April Moon (1990) managed only something over half a million sales, and sales of her third album 43 Minutes (1993) were also poor. Her independently-released album Box (1997) made 17,000-odd sales.
She spent some time as featured vocalist with Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, and was a backing singer on Pink Floyd's Division Bell tour in 1994. In 2000 the album Reboot was released. In April 2003 the BBC broadcast an interview with her, playing her ukulele and singing "Kiss of Love". Her most recent releases (2007) are Of the Moment and an EP of acoustic arrangements, Ukulele and Voice, recorded with her father.
Some new tracks have also been made available for listening on her Myspace profile, and her official fan club site [url=[officialsite]http://www.onecandle.co.uk]One Candle offers two demo tracks of the album.
Can I Get a Witness
Sam Brown Lyrics

Is it right to be left alone when the one you love is never home
I love too hard my friends sometimes say
But I believe I believe that a woman should be loved that way
But it hurts me so inside to see you treat me so unkind
Somebody somewhere tell her it ain't fair
Can I get a witness (Can I get a witness)
I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
Somebody (Can I get a witness)
Is it right to be treated so bad when you give her everything you had
Keep on talking in my sleep 'cause I haven't seen my baby all week
Now you kids you all agree is that the way it's supposed to be
Let me hear you, let me hear you say yeah, yeah, yeah
Up early in the morning with her on my mind
Took to find it out all night I been cryin'
But I believe a woman's a man's best friend
I'm gonna stick by hr till the very end
Well she causes so much misery how's a gal supposed to be
Somebody somewhere tell her it ain't right
Can I get a witness, can I get a witness
(Can I get a witness), I want a witness
(Can I get a witness), witness, witness
(Can I get a witness), witness, witness
(Can I get a witness)
Everybody knows especially you girls
That a love can be sad but my beloved's twice as bad
Now you kids do all agree that ain't the way it's supposed to be
Let me hear you, let me hear you say yeah, yeah, yeah
I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
Yeah, I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
Somebody (Can I get a witness)
Is it right to be treated so bad when you give her everything you had
Keep on talking in my sleep 'cause I haven't seen my baby all week
Now you kids you all agree is that the way it's supposed to be
Let me hear you, let me hear you say yeah, yeah, yeah
I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
I want a witness (Can I get a witness)
Witness, witness, yeah, I want a witness
The lyrics to Sam Brown's song "Can I Get A Witness" describe the pain and frustration of a woman who feels neglected by her partner. The opening lines address the audience, declaring that this is a message for everybody, but especially for the girls. The song asks whether it is right for a woman to be left alone when her partner is never around, even though she loves him strongly. The repetition of the line "Can I get a witness" suggests desperation; the singer is imploring someone to acknowledge her pain and to confirm that her situation is unfair. This is reinforced by the lines "somebody, somewhere tell her it ain't fair" and "somebody, somewhere tell her it ain't right."
The second verse continues to depict the emotional turmoil of the singer. She reveals that she has been crying all night because she has not seen her partner for a week. She expresses her belief that a woman should be a man's best friend and that she will stick by her partner even though he causes her misery. The song ends with a plea for a witness, a person who can confirm that the singer's pain is real and that she deserves better treatment.
Overall, the lyrics of "Can I Get A Witness" convey a sense of heartbreak and disillusionment. The singer feels neglected, betrayed, and unloved by her partner, and she longs for someone to acknowledge her pain. Though the song is specific to the experiences of a woman, its themes of love, loss, and longing are universal.
