I absolutely love love love love love Sam Cooke! My dad introduced me to this heavenly voice at the age of 4 and I remember it til this day! His voice had and still has such a profound affect on me and listening to these beautiful songs helps me to draw closer to God in the most profound way humanly known to man!!!! Oooohh! Mr. Johnny Taylor was actually a preacher, preaching the word. He was back and forth just about all his life. Like many has said, back in the days when things were different for blacks in America, Church was a relief and outlet for us. You worked,went to school and you was for sure in church. So most of the late-great soul singers got their start in a church choir. To make money,they crossed over to soul,blues- later r&b.

Wow. Your critical comments are something. This song served its purpose in its time. It ministered to who it was suppose to minister to, and trust me it still has an impact for many who need a word. Johnnie Taylor was a member of the Soul stirrers as was Bobby Smack. You're most of the earlier groups or singers were rotted in the church. Ever notice how much womack sounds like Sam Cooke? The same style of singing.

The narrow minded critics judging Sam Cooke for moving beyond gospel music do not reckon or credit his secular fans bearing witness to his recordings with the Soul Stirrers. What heavy heart could not be uplifted by "Jesus Gave Me Water", "Nearer to Thee", ''I'm So Glad'' ... ? His beautiful, soulful voice was meant to be heard by multitudes.

Urban Commute Sam was and is in a category by himself....First....he wasn't a true tenor. .. He had to train himself to sing tenor...a natural male soprano...who didn't have to use gimmicks nor falsetto to hit any note he desired. While I was with the Soul Stirrers. .. Cousin LC,and David would say " Close but no cigar...lol..Check out...Larry Hilton Cooke 3...I'm singing that natural...and Sam would still boot me out of the studio...lol... Sam would often clip the old fused speakers. ..
