King of Anything
Sam Tsui feat. Kurt Schneider Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)

Keep drinkin' coffee
Stare me down across the table
While I look outside

So many things I'd say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet
And count the cars that pass by

You've got opinions, man
We're all entitled to 'em
But I never asked

So let me thank you for your time
And try not to waste any more of mine
Get out of here fast

I hate to break it you, babe
But I'm not drowning
There's no one here to save

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be
Who died
And made you king of anything?

Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh, whoa
Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)

You sound so innocent
All full of good intent
You swear you know best

But you expect me to
Jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

I'm not the one who's lost
With no direction, oh
But you'll never see

You're so busy makin' maps
With my name on them in all caps
You got the talkin' down just not the listening

And who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be
Who died
And made you king of anything?

All my life
I've tried
To make everybody happy while I
Just hurt
And hide
Waitin' for someone to tell me it's my turn
To decide

Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)
Yeah, yeah

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be
Who died
And made you king of anything?

And who cares if you disagree
(Who cares if you disagree)
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
And you dare tell me who to be
(You dare tell me who to be)
Who died
And made you king of anything?

Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)
Let me hold your crown, babe
Oh (oh oh oh)
Oh (oh oh oh)

Whoa, whoa
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "King of Anything" by Sam Tsui feat. Kurt Schneider is a message to someone who thinks they can tell others what to do while not taking into consideration their own lives. The lyrics describe someone who is trying to impose their opinions on the singer and control their actions. Despite the individual's words of good intention, they are too caught up in their own ideas and refuse to listen to any other perspective. The singer tells the individual that they are entitled to their opinions, but they never asked for them. They thank the individual for their time but ask them to leave as they are not going to waste any more of their own time.

The singer goes on to say that they have been trying to make everyone happy their whole life, but in doing so, they have only hurt themselves. They have been waiting for someone to tell them that it's their turn to decide what they want for themselves. The hook of the song repeats the question, "Who made you king of anything?" reminding the individual that they are not in charge of anyone's life but their own.

What makes this so great is that he really turns up the pettiness and sass in his delivery of the lyrics, and it really fits perfectly and seems like it was always meant to be like this. Love it! 💖
