My Romance
Sammy Davis Jr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My romance doesn't have to have a moon in the sky
My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by
No month of may, no twinkling stars
No hide away, no softly guitars

My romance doesn't need a castle rising in spain
Nor a dance to a constantly surprising refrain
Wide awake I can make my most fantastic dreams come true

My romance doesn't need a thing but you
My romance doesn't need a thing but you

Overall Meaning

In Sammy Davis Jr's song, "My Romance," the singer proclaims that his love for his partner is not dependent on grand gestures or external symbols of love. He sings that his romance doesn't need a moon in the sky or a blue lagoon, no month of May or twinkling stars, and no hideaway or softly playing guitars. The singer is essentially saying that he doesn't need any of these typical romantic symbols in order for his love to be authentic and real.

He goes on to say that his romance doesn't need a castle rising in Spain or a constantly surprising refrain to dance to. He believes that he can make his most fantastic dreams come true as long as he has his partner by his side. For the singer, his romance doesn't require a lavish or extraordinary setting, but rather just the presence and love of his partner to fulfill him.

Overall, "My Romance" highlights the power and beauty of a true love that is not dependent on external factors but rather on the deep connection that two people share. It emphasizes the importance of the simplicity of love and how it can triumph over grandiose displays of affection.

He was one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th Century! They don't have his kind anymore! So sad! He could do it all! Singers today can't do one tenth of what he could! I am glad I lived in his lifetime! I only wish I had seen him in person.

Do you have Sammy singing Something's Coming from West Side Story? I have looked all over and can't find it. Thanks for this, BTW. I had the album Showstoppers by Sammy and wish I still had it. He was great, overshadowed by Sinatra, but wonderful nonetheless.
