Something's Gotta Give
Sammy Davis Jr Lyrics

Meets an old immovable object like me
You can bet just as sure as you live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist
Somewhere, somehow
Someone's gotta be kissed
So, en garde, who knows what the fates might have in store
From their vast mysterious sky
I'll try hard ignorin' those lips that I adore
But how long can anyone try?
Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star-spangled night
We'll find out just as sure as we live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Fight, fight, fight it with all of your might
Chances are that some heavenly star-spangled night
We'll find out just as sure as we live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Aw, let's tear it up
The lyrics of Sammy Davis Jr's song "Something's Gotta Give" depict the conflict that arises when two opposing forces, represented by two individuals, meet each other. The singer suggests that when an irresistible force, represented by the other person, meets an old immovable object like himself, something has got to give. The lyrics suggest that this conflict can only be resolved by one party giving in, as neither party can exist without causing resistance to the other.
The singer further goes on to describe the intensity of the situation, saying that when an irrepressible smile, represented by the other person, warms an old implacable heart such as his, he insists that someone has got to be kissed, implying that the attraction between the two forces is too strong to be ignored. The singer describes the futility of trying to ignore the attraction, suggesting that he'll try his best to ignore the other person's lips, but how long can anyone try?
The lyrics suggest that the situation can only be resolved through a fight - a metaphorical one - as the singer suggests the need to fight with all of their might to resolve their opposing forces. The singer also suggests that it might take a long time, but eventually, something's gotta give. The song ends with the suggestion to tear it up, suggesting that the conflict has been resolved.
