Sara Em is 30 years old and has been making her own music for more than 10 years. She was brought up in a christian home, and the family sang a lot together in church (pentecostal).
In her twenties Sara Em came out as gay, and struggled for several years with her identity and perception of God and what he was thinking of her being a lesbian. These years were very painful, and Sara Em wrote a lot of lyrics and music during this time where she expressed her feeling of exclusion from the church and longing for God.
If you talk with Sara Em today, she will tell you that she has landed in the feeling and conviction that God loves her - not in spite of her being a lesbian, but because she is herself. Exactly as God made her.

Say love
Sara Em Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That I must change myself
To be received
And I wonder now
Did Messiah come in vain for you
Do you hear me
I wont let you take what He gave me
Do you hear me
Say love
I wont let you kill 'cause He made me
I wish you knew Him like I do
I do, I do, I do
You'd know that love is what
We're meant to do
And I wonder now...
Do you hear me...
I wont let you kill what He made
It took a lot for me to mend
And I can't be your sacrifice
And I wanna tell you
He loves me just the way I am
And I am, I am, I am
Do you hear me...
The lyrics of Sara Em's song "Say Love" explore the conflict between the individualistic nature of self-expression and the expectations and demands of society. The song begins with the singer being told that in order to be accepted, she must change herself. The phrase "Did Messiah come in vain for you" questions the idea that someone would claim to be speaking from a place of love and yet expect others to conform to their standards. The song then moves on to a declaration of the singer's refusal to allow others to take or kill the love that was given to her.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the importance of love and how it is meant to be expressed. The singer wishes that those who would try to change her could understand the kind of love that she has come to know. In this way, the song is an appeal for understanding and acceptance. It also presents a critique of those who would use religion or other forms of authority to justify the suppression of individual expression.
Overall, Sara Em's "Say Love" is a song about the struggle for self-expression and the importance of being true to one's own identity. Through its lyrics, the song highlights the need for understanding and acceptance in the face of societal pressures to conform.
