River
Sarah McLachlan featuring The Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Children's Cho Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
Singing songs of joy and peace

Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
But it don't snow here
It stays pretty green
I'm going to make a lot of money
And then I'm going to quit this crazy scene

Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly high

Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

I made my baby cry

He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees

Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

But I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad
Now I've gone and lost
The best baby that I ever had

Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

Oh, I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly high

Oh, I wish I had a river
That I could skate away on

I made my baby say goodbye

It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
Singing songs of joy and peace

Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "River" by Sarah McLachlan reflect a sense of yearning and nostalgia amidst the festive cheer of Christmas. The first verse describes the preparations for Christmas, but the singer feels out of place, as they do not have snow or the typical holiday scenery. The chorus begins with the recurring line, "Oh I wish I had a river, I could skate away on," which symbolizes a desire to escape the mundane aspects of life and seek solace in a peaceful place.

The second verse shifts focus to the singer's personal life, as they talk about wanting to make a lot of money and leave behind the chaos they are currently experiencing. The chorus repeats the same line, emphasizing the longing for something more fulfilling. The third verse delves deeper into the singer's emotions, as they have made their loved one cry and lost them. The chorus is repeated once again, suggesting that the river represents an escape not only from the physical setting but also from emotional turmoil.

I'm a stickler for the versions of the Christmas songs I grew up with ... This song is an exception. She nailed this.

@Yahziboy

If John Lennon gave us nothing else, he is still a genius for giving this song to Mankind. It makes me cry when I hear it and see the kids working in harmony. I miss you John.

Happy New Year Barbara! Hope you had a great Christmas.

I am a 41 year old Disabled Marine Veteran. I have seen a lot of messed up stuff in this world, but two things have given me inspiration throughout life- music and positive people others can look up to. For me, Sarah McLachlan is tops on both lists. This is such a beautiful version of a classic song. My favorite Christmas song sung by one of my favorite artists. A very Merry Christmas indeed.
