Wednesday the Third
Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Would you tell me why everything has to be lies
Leaving everyone wondering when we'll all wind up dead
To all we are within
Wednesday the third was the night that you rambled
Alone in the frigid white light like a leopard
About to dig in to trembling skin
With wind whipping your shins
Oh
Haven't you heard the news
Nobody came too soon
Surprise our eyes are opening up to you
Now as I lean to the side
I can see all the thoughts that you're trying to hide
I've arranged for a ferry to France
Where you should relax, don't worry about the pets
They'll be safe at our address
Oh
Haven't you heard the news
Nobody came too soon
Surprise our eyes are opening up to you
Nobody came too soon
Surprise our eyes are opening up to you
You'll always be in our eyes opening up to you
You've left everyone wondering when we'll all end up dead
To all we are within
Now as daisies dry off
And the wind scurries scarlet leaves like they were dust
We can see somewhere off to the east
A gaggle of geese are singing your goodbye
Hear the sweetest lullaby
Listen up to hear the sky will soon clear
And you'll be the last one to wish for rain
The lyrics to Saves the Day's "Wednesday the Third" are somewhat cryptic, but hint at themes of deceit and mortality. The opening lines, "Now as I lay by your side / Would you tell me why everything has to be lies," suggest a sense of disillusionment or betrayal. The singer seems frustrated with the need for dishonesty and the consequent uncertainty it breeds about the future. This feeling is compounded by the line "Leaving everyone wondering when we'll all wind up dead," which hints at a sense of fragility and impermanence to life.
The title of the song, "Wednesday the Third," seems to be a specific date or moment in time that holds significance for the singer. The line "Wednesday the third was the night that you rambled" suggests that this date may hold some kind of painful memory or association with the person being addressed. The imagery in the following lines paints a picture of isolation and vulnerability, with the person alone in a harsh, cold environment, preparing to attack themselves. The refrain of "Haven't you heard the news / Nobody came too soon / Surprise our eyes are opening up to you" seems to be a sarcastic reference to some kind of publicity or attention being sought by the person being addressed, maybe in the wake of a tragedy.
Later in the song, there is a shift in tone with the lines "Now as daisies dry off / And the wind scurries scarlet leaves like they were dust / We can see somewhere off to the east / A gaggle of geese are singing your goodbye." These lines suggest a sense of closure or resolution, perhaps even a kind of acceptance of mortality. The person being addressed seems to be leaving or passing away, with the image of the geese singing their goodbye providing a sense of peacefulness and continuity. The final line, "And you'll be the last one to wish for rain," feels poignant and final, emphasizing the idea that this person's story has come to an end.
Overall, "Wednesday the Third" is a song that grapples with life's uncertainties and complexities, while also hinting at the possibility of finding peace and closure in the face of mortality.
