It Ain't Me
Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox feat. Emily Braden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had a dream we were sipping whiskey neat
Highest floor, The Bowery
Nowhere's high enough
Somewhere along the lines
We stopped seeing eye to eye
You were staying out all night
And I had enough
No, I don't wanna know
Where you been or where you're goin'
But I know I won't be home
And you'll be on your own
Who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?
Who's gonna rock you
When the sun won't let you sleep?
Who's waking up to drive you home
When you're drunk and all alone?
Who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?

It ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me

I had a dream we were back to seventeen
Summer nights and The Libertines
Never growing up i'll take with me
The polaroids and the memories
But you know I'm gonna leave
Behind the worst of us who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?
Who's gonna rock you
When the sun won't let you sleep?
Who's waking up to drive you home
When you're drunk and all alone?
Who's gonna walk you
Through the dark side of the morning?

It ain't me, no no it ain't me, no no
It ain't me, no no it ain't me, no no
Who's gonna walk you through the
Dark side of the morning? It ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me
(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful) it ain't me

(The Bowery, whiskey neat, grateful
I'm so grateful)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "It Ain't Me" by Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox feat. Emily Braden tell a poignant story of a relationship that has become strained and distant. The singer reflects on a dream where they were together in a high-class setting, sipping whiskey and enjoying each other's company. However, as the relationship progresses, they start to drift apart, with the other person staying out all night and causing heartache. The singer reaches a breaking point where they realize they can't continue in this destructive pattern.

The chorus of the song revolves around the repeated statement "It ain't me," emphasizing the singer's decision to distance themselves from the toxic relationship. Despite the memories of happier times shared at seventeen and the nostalgia of summer nights, the singer acknowledges that they need to leave behind the negative aspects of the relationship. They question who will be there to support the other person through their darkest moments, but ultimately, they assert that they cannot be the one to fulfill that role anymore.

The lyrics convey a sense of resignation and acceptance of the need to move on from a relationship that has become unhealthy. The singer expresses gratitude for the good times they shared but recognizes that they must prioritize their own well-being. The repetition of the phrase "It ain't me" underscores the finality of the decision to let go and move forward, even though it may be painful. Overall, the song captures the bittersweet reality of letting go of a relationship that has run its course, emphasizing the importance of self-care and boundaries in the face of emotional hardship.

muriaal Exactly what I was thinking!

@greenboi3458

Her deepish female voice and scatting remind me a lot of Ella Fitzgerald! Amazing cover!

@jennyrahaman7485

It does not sound like Ella Fitzgerald. In Ella Fitzgerald's duets with Louis Armstrong in Cheek to Cheek or Dream a Little Dream of Me, her voice was much deeper and a bit more gravelly, Ella Fitzgerald had a much stronger range. I love Ella Fitzgerald's voice and I think this singer does a good performance but they do not sound similar or the same.

@greenboi3458

@@jennyrahaman7485 of course, Ella was in a class of her own. I mainly meant that her style of singing is reminiscent, and Ella is probably a reference for her.

Even during her scatting solo during this song, she uses similar patterns and sounds that Ella uses. Sarah Vaughn as well.

It's been 5 years and I still come back to this one because it's stuck in my brain as such a good composition and melody
