Gangsta's Paradise
Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox feat. Robyn Adele Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life
And realize there's nothing left
'Cause I've been brassing and laughing so long
That even my momma thinks that my mind has gone
But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
You better watch how ya talking
And where ya walking
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk

I really hate to trip but I gotta lop
As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke
Fool, I'm the kinda G that little homie's wanna be like
On my knees in the night
Saying prayers in the street light

Been spending most their lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise

Forget the situation they got me facing
I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the state
So I gotta be down with the 'hood team
Too much television watching got me chasing dreams
I'm an educated fool with money on my mind
Got my ten in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a locked out gangsta, set tripping banger
And my homies is down so don't arouse my anger
Fool, death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away
I'm living life do or die, what can I say?
I'm twenty-three now, will I ever live to see twenty-four?
The way things is going I don't know.

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?

Been spending most their lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise

Power in the money, money in the power
Minute after minute, hour after hour
Everybody's running, but half of them ain't looking
It's going on in the kitchen
But I don't know what's cooking
They say I gotta learn
But nobody's here to teach me
If they can't understand it, how can they reach me?
I guess they can't, I guess they won't
I guess they front
That's why I know my life is out of luck, fool

Been spending most their lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives
Living in a gangsta's paradise

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?

Overall Meaning

The song Gangsta's Paradise by Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox feat. Robyn Adele Anderson is a cover of the original 1995 hit by Coolio. The song is a first-person narrative of a man living a dangerous, violent life as a gangsta in a desolate and hopeless environment. The first verse of the song refers to the "valley of the shadow of death," a biblical reference to the Book of Psalms. The singer reflects on his life, concluding that nothing is left as he has been "brassing and laughing" so long that his own mother now thinks he has lost his mind. Despite this, the singer asserts that he has never harmed an innocent person and does not tolerate disrespect from others. The chorus of the song reflects the sadness and resignation of the singer and his fellow gang members, confessing that they have spent most of their lives living in a gangsta's paradise.

The second verse of the song delves deeper into the singer's backstory, revealing that he was raised by the state and thus never had a chance at a normal life. The singer is disillusioned with society and feels an intense connection to his gang and fellow members, with whom he shares a strong bond. He is hungry for success and money, but his journey is hampered by the fact that no one wants to help him. The third verse introduces the idea that the singer is aware of the destruction caused by his lifestyle, but he is helpless to change it. The final chorus drives home the message that society is ultimately responsible for creating the conditions that lead to gang violence.

Overall, Gangsta's Paradise is a poignant reminder that many people living in poor and marginalized communities have very few options and are often forced into dangerous and violent lifestyles.

@Magnavox-1972

Never occurred to me, but doing a Gangsta’s Paradise cover in the style of Jazz popular during the prohibition era is such a perfect fit, and in retrospect, so obvious a decision. Well done, “fellas!” :D

@gbulmer

I think something which hasn't been thought of in 20 years, yet "in retrospect, so obvious", is a good working definition of genius. Best wishes or 2022.

@gwillis01

I totally agree with you Magnavox 1972.

@lordsiomai
