All My Love's Laughter
Scott Walker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All my love's laughter
And all my love's faces
She comes in the morning
Her cloak in her arms

She's following after
The king of all places
And your tenderest warnin'
Could bruise all her charm

But don't lose your heart
To that beautiful sinner
She walks without shining a light now

She stands in the shade
And the sun is there in her
But you'll never know till it's night

All my love's softness
And ll my love's graces
She carries all things
In her tiny white glove

She hides all her lostness
In satins and laces
And everyone says, everyone says
She's searching for sweet love

But don't try to hold on
To Satan's proud lady
She stands with her flock
All alone on the hill

Her stockings are hung

And her eyes are so shady
She's winning and you never will

Overall Meaning

The song "All My Love's Laughter" by Scott Walker represents the complexity and mystery of love. The lyrics speak to someone who is in love with a woman who embodies many different traits and emotions. She comes in the morning, carrying her cloak in her arms and following the king of all places. The woman is multi-faceted and can be both tender and charming or elusive and unattainable.

The lyrics warn against falling for this “beautiful sinner” who walks without shining a light or standing in the shade where the sun is still upon her. Her lostness is hidden in satins and laces as she searches for sweet love. Despite her fragile appearance, the lyrics suggest that she is a powerful force, and one must be cautious when engaging with her.

The song also conveys the idea that love is unpredictable and cannot be controlled. The woman represented in the lyrics is someone who carries all things in her tiny white glove and can be both soft and graceful. However, the lyrics make it clear that you should not try to hold on; loving someone like this can be dangerous and come with consequences.

Overall, “All My Love’s Laughter” speaks to the complexities and mysteries of love, and the many faces and emotions that come with it.

All my love's laughter
And all my love's faces
She comes in the morning, her cloak in her arm
She's following after
The king of all places
And your tendress warming
Will bruise all her charms
Don't lose your heart too
That beautiful sinner
She wants without shouting
Her life now
She stands in the shade
And the sun is there, in her
But you never know
Till it's night.

All my love's softness
And all my love's graces
She carries on these things
In a tiny white glove
She hides all her lostness
In satins and laces
And everyone says, She's searching for a true love
Don't try to hold on
To say truth proudly

She stands with the flock
All alone on the hill
Her stockings are hung
And her eyes are so shaded
She's winning and you never will

Thanks Arthur Fleischman, and I hope you don't miind my writing down my version of the lyrics after consulting Jimmy Webb's original lyrics and listening a few times to this song as sung by Scott Walker. He made a few minor changes to the original lyrics, e.g. "true love" instead of "sweet love". Here goes:

All my love's laughter
And all my love's faces
She comes in the morning,
Her cloak in her arms
She's following after
The king of all places
And your tenderest warnin’
Will bruise all her charms
Don't lose your heart to
That beautiful sinner
She walks without shining a light now
She stands in the shade
And the sun is there in her
But you never know till it's night.

All my love's softness
And all my love's graces
She carries all these things
In a tiny white glove
She hides all her lostness
In satins and laces
And everyone says
She's searching for true love
Don't try to hold on
To Satan’s proud lady
She stands with the flock
All alone on the hill
Her stockings are hung
And her eyes are so shady
She's winning and you never will

Apart from Scott's voice, the last minute-long instrumental is wonderful.
Great photos, too.

It's funny when you're taken by surprise like this. A wonderful version, similar in style to Jimmy Webb's, with a real early 70's ending sound. But Scott, as always, does a perfect rendering. He was always so underrated as a singer.  Great posting!
