End of the Road
Sentenced (The Funeral Album - Japanese Edition) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here we are, now lay the burden down.
We're coming to the end of our road.
Sorrowful, yet glorious somehow
to be humming these one last ode, so calm and still.

It wasn't all that bad, or was it now?
Fulfilled, it doesn't only hurt to end it now,
The Funeral.

The memories beneath the dust of years,
they seem like those of someone deceased.
There's no more to be done, or hoped or feared.
Just waiting for the final release, so calm and thrilled.

It wasn't all that bad, or was it now?
Still, it doesn't only hurt to end it now.

Is life over, this life's over?
Or has it only just begun?
It grovs colder, starts to molder

Coming apart yet still not done.
Forever one.

Overall Meaning

The song "End of the Road" by Sentenced is a reflection on life and the end of it. The lyrics begin with the realization that the end is near and the burden that has been carried all along can finally be laid down. There is a sense of sorrow and sadness in the realization, but also a peacefulness and glory in the acceptance of it. The song acknowledges that life is not all bad and that perhaps the end has come at the right time, when fulfillment has been reached. The Funeral is seen as a time for reflection and remembrance. The memories of life are now buried in the dust of time and the journey is over. There is nothing more to be done or hoped for, only a final release to be experienced. The song ends with a question, is this the end or just the beginning of something new?

The best solo I know. Sentenced was my fav band and I my husband decided to travel to Finland, to the funeral concert. I got pregnant and we got to change plans. But I still wish with every fiber of my body that I was there. Amazing band, awesome

@Betonoszlop

Perhaps the most perfect goodbye-song ever made.

@Meemitalo_

+Betonoszlop One reason is that it felt really final too. Funeral and stuff. And no five goodbye-tours like some bands. It really was their last album's last song

@nicoletagroedahl9375

oh, but is the most perfect

@TigerYoshiki

I agree. :)

@fourtyfit7348

It is amazing how it plants the feeling of the actual "end of the road". I'm speechless about it.

@Afterdark68

This group is the only reason why I never put that noose around my neck. Thank you Sentenced. Love you guys. RIP Miika!

@daginn896

All my favourite groups growing up is gone, and so many of their members are dead, like Miika from Sentenced and Valfar from Windir. Im sitting here, as an old dude now, drinking my beer and thinking about the past, listening to music i grew up with, oh the nostalgica. Cheers from Norway.
