Going Out of My Head
Sergio Mendes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I think I'm going out of my head.
Yes I think I'm going out of my head
Over you, over you.

I want you to want me.
I need you so badly,
I can't think of anything but you.
I want you to want me.
I need you so badly,
I can't think of anything but you.

And I think I'm going out of my head
'Cause I can't explain the tears that I shed
Over you, over you.

I see you each morning but you just walk past me
You don't even know that I exist

Going out of my head over you,
Out of my head over you,
Out of my head day and night,
Night and day and night wrong or right.

I must think of a way into your heart.
There's no reason why my being shy should keep us apart

And I think I'm going out of my head.
Yes I think I'm going out of my head. Repeat and fade

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 [OST Mad Men]'s song Going Out Of My Head speak of the pain of unrequited love. The singer is overwhelmed with feelings for someone who doesn't seem to reciprocate. They're so consumed with thoughts of this person that they can't even focus on anything else. The repeated lines "I want you to want me, I need you so badly, I can't think of anything but you" drive home the intensity of the singer's longing.

The chorus emphasizes how this one-sided love is affecting the singer's mental state; they feel like they're "going out of [their] head" and can't explain the tears they're shedding over this person. The second verse adds a layer of frustration, as the singer sees this person every day but doesn't even register on their radar. Despite this, the singer remains hopeful, thinking of ways to win this person's heart and overcome their shyness.

Overall, the song captures the universal experience of unrequited love and the consuming nature of infatuation.

Omg! My parents always played music in our house. We were so lucky to know such beautiful songs! Brazil 66 was one of the many. I am so thankful for such great tunes. I was born in ’57

I was barely 5 years old in the early 70s, and I can still remember my mother singing to this. I swear to GOD her voice was just as beautiful and melodic as Lani's. Oh how I wish I could have those days again!

Listening to this puts me back to my childhood. My Mother played this record over and over. She has since passed in 2015. But when my sister and I get into her car, we listen to this and are brought back,as well as bringing my mom back. Thank you
