The name is taken from the title of the song "Shakespeare's Sister" by The Smiths and in reference to Virginia Woolf's work A Room of One's Own. There have been minor variations in the spelling of the band's name over the years, which lost the final "e" from "Shakespeare" (and the apostrophe) when a friend made a woodcut logo for Fahey with the name carved as "Shakespear", a once common spelling of Shakespeare's name. The apostrophe was, however, featured on the cover of the first album, Sacred Heart.
In 2009, after a 13-year hiatus, Fahey resurrected the name Shakespears Sister and released a new album, Songs from the Red Room.

Shakespears Sister Lyrics

Black sky, blue world, green eyes
And you'll come running
To the dark side of the moon
And 'though you'll never find us
We'll still be watching you
Come on, tune in to the life
Black sky, blue world, green eyes
No rest for the good
No use in pretending
Love is in your blood
Come on, tune in to the light
Black sky, blue world, green eyes
Come on...
In Shakespears Sister's song "Black Sky", the lyrics describe a contrast between the darkness of the sky and the beauty of the world. The phrase "black sky" evokes feelings of mystery and danger, while "blue world" and "green eyes" bring to mind images of nature and life. The song encourages the listener to tune into the "light" and to let love fill their blood.
The chorus suggests that there is no rest for the wicked or the good, implying that life is constant and never truly peaceful. The phrase "to the dark side of the moon" could be a reference to Pink Floyd's famous album of the same name, which explores themes of isolation and loneliness. The lines "And 'though you'll never find us / We'll still be watching you" could be interpreted as a nod to the idea of a higher power or unseen forces that are always present.
Overall, the lyrics of "Black Sky" seem to be encouraging the listener to embrace life's beauty and to not be afraid of the darkness. The repetition of the phrase "Come on, tune in to the light / Black sky, blue world, green eyes" reinforces this message and creates a sense of urgency in the listener.

Takes me back many, many moons ago. I was in middle school and rocking out to my Shakespeare's Sister cassette tape. Good times. Timeless!

Wow, so much like Fools Gold - Stone Roses at the start, but it's a b-side I keep returning to again and again even now, as for me as it is unforgettable song from early 1990s.

Apparently clueless about the true meaning of a lot of their songs at the time. Still grooving the sound.
