I Can't Get You
Shirley Bassey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though I have tried to play make-believe
I find I can't deceive my lonely heart
Though I have tried to escape the past
I guess I know at last your
Love is part of me

Though I have seen new faces
Been to romantic places
I still feel lost when you're not around
In fact, I can't get you out of my mind

Though I have seen new faces
Been to romantic places

I still feel lost when you're not around
In fact, I can't get you out of my mind

Overall Meaning

In "I Get a Kick Out of You," Shirley Bassey and Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra toy with the idea of addiction and the lengths people go to find pleasure in life. The song starts off by stating that champagne and alcohol don't do anything for the singer--they don't get a kick out of them. The lyrics then introduce the idea of cocaine and how the singer doesn't find anything special about it, either. However, despite all of this, the singer still gets a kick out of the person they're singing about. Even though they know that person doesn't feel the same way, the mere presence of them is enough to stir up that feeling of pleasure.

The last verse of the song takes a slightly different turn. Instead of talking about substances, the lyrics describe what other people might do to get that feeling of exhilaration. They might do things like fly in a plane with a lover, but the singer doesn't get a thrill out of that. Instead, they get it from the person they're singing about. In the end, the song speaks to the futility of trying to find happiness in external things. Despite all the highs and lows life can offer, perhaps the true pleasure comes from being near the ones you love.

I have never seen someone be able to draw in the audience like she does and make them think she is singing only to them and someone not afraid to show emotion and a good way to get a drink instead of just walking off the stage. Loved her performance of Still in Japan look it up .. She is wonderful
