Run To The Hills
Sign Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White man came across the sea,
He brought us pain and misery.
He killed our tribes, he killed our creed,
He took our game for his own need.

We fought him hard, we fought him well,
Out on the plains we gave him hell.
But many came, too much for Cree,
Oh will we ever be set free?

Riding through dustclouds and barren wastes,
Galloping hard on the plains.
Chasing the redskins back to their holes,
Fighting them at their own game.
Murder for freedom, a stab in the back.
Women and children and cowards attack.

Run to the hills, run for your lives.
Run to the hills, run for your lives.

Soldier blue in the barren wastes,
Hunting and killing for game.
Raping the women and wasting the men,
The only good Indians are tame.
Selling them whisky and taking their gold,
Enslaving the young and destroying the old.

Run to the hills, run for your lives.

(repeat to end)

Overall Meaning

The song 'Run To The Hills' by Iron Maiden's is a reflection on the colonization of America and the brutal treatment of Native Americans at the hands of white settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries. The opening lyrics "White man came across the sea, He brought us pain and misery. He killed our tribes, he killed our creed, He took our game for his own need," depict the arrival of Europeans in America which ultimately led to the displacement and oppression of Native American culture and people.

The song goes on to describe the resistance put up by Native American tribes against the European settlers. While they initially fought hard and well, eventually, their numbers were overwhelmed, and they were forced to run for their lives. The lyrics "Riding through dust clouds and barren wastes, Galloping hard on the plains. Chasing the redskins back to their holes, Fighting them at their own game. Murder for freedom, a stab in the back. Women and children and cowards attack" show how the Europeans used brutal force to dominate the native tribes and how they cheated and attacked them in a cowardly fashion.

The final verse describes the horrors faced by Native Americans at the hands of white settlers, including hunting for sport, rapacious and inhuman behavior, and slavery. The lyrics "Soldier blue in the barren wastes, Hunting and killing for game. Raping the women and wasting the men, The only good Indians are tame. Selling them whisky and taking their gold, Enslaving the young and destroying the old" highlights the gruesome atrocities committed by white settlers and how they took over lands and resources.

This will always be my favourite version. I first heard this years ago on the free CD from Kerrang Magazine.

@titaniabell6680

Same here... still love this version !!

@mephisto656

They had the courage a lot of bands on that record didn't: Do a original version. Now THIS is a cover version.

@Hammercat42

The best intro ever, great story telling feeling

@ganondorfchampin

Definitely the most creative cover on the album. Yeah, it sounds VERY different from the original, but it's actually pretty good.

@philippenoviant860

A cover MUST NOT be different... Else, perform your own creation! When you 'cover' differently, you're just a lazy group with no talent to compose by your own...

STFU.

@DrMorbid

@@philippenoviant860 It takes tremendous creativity and musicianship to take SUCH a well known song such as RTTH and rework it into something different. It's just too much stuck inside of your mind. It's super hard to perform any part differently. I deeply respect covers and tributes such as this one and on the other hand I have no motivation to listen to covers too close to the original. I just don't see the point in them. We have the original, right? If you don't do it differently, why bother?

@philippenoviant860

@@DrMorbid I full understand what you mean but COMPLETLY disagree with it... So we are different... ;) I repeat what I've said : if you want to work, work on your own creation... from the beginning... Using songs from other groups to readapt, for me, it's an insult. But, I repeat, I can understand your point of view.

@JiosX

@@philippenoviant860 listen to Black Sabbath by Type O Negative and then sew your damn mouth. Opinions like yours shouldn't exist.
