Coming Up For Air
Signals In Smoke Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How long can you wait
To breathe deep?
How long can you stay
Underneath?

It′s hard to believe
But I know your heart still beats
Rise on up, baby
Don't need eyes to see

It ain′t over love
This I swear
We're coming up for air
It ain't over yet
The light′s right here
And we′re coming up for air

End of the line
There's still time
Listen to me, child
You′re alive

It's hard to believe
But I know your heart still beats
Rise on up, baby
Don′t need eyes to see

It ain't over love
This I swear
We′re coming up for air
It ain't over yet

The light's right here
And we′re coming up for air

Overall Meaning

In the song "Coming Up for Air" by Signals In Smoke, the lyrics address the idea of feeling trapped and suffocated by life, but despite that, there is still hope. The first two lines "How long can you wait, to breathe deep? How long can you stay, underneath?" suggest that the person the song is addressing is struggling to find a way to escape their current situation. It can be interpreted as a metaphor for feeling trapped within a certain aspect of life, whether it be a relationship, career, or other life circumstance. The repetition of "It's hard to believe, but I know your heart still beats, Rise on up, baby, Don't need eyes to see" serves as a motivational statement to encourage the person to fight and not give up. The artist expresses that regardless of how deep the individual is in their situation, they are not alone and that hope still exists.

The chorus "It ain't over love, this I swear. We're coming up for air. It ain't over yet, The light's right here, And we're coming up for air" serves as an anthem of hope for the individual. The artist assures them that despite all the hardships, there is still plenty of time to overcome the obstacles and accomplish what they want in life. The phrase "coming up for air" symbolizes the notion of finally being able to breathe, take a step back, and overcome the struggles of life.

Overall, the song is an uplifting testament of hope that encourages individuals to push through adversity and come out on the other side.

Why did Hope look at the picture of her family? Was she looking at Klaus or who? Or just all of them?

Astonishingly beautiful! (And yes, I heard it on "Grey's" and it grabbed me by the eardrums and wouldn't let go!) Some of you may be old enough to remember when a rock band being on TV was considered a sellout. Now, with so few commercial stations playing anything like interesting music, TV soundtracks (and commecials) seem to be the main means of exposure of the best new artists. Thanks to the folks on "Grey's" for having such great ears!
