Nothing Compares 2 U
Sinéad O'Connor Lyrics
It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
Nothing compares to you
It's been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me, baby, where did I go wrong
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they'd only remind me of you
I went to the doctor and guess what he told me?
Guess what he told me?
He said, "Girl you better try to have fun
No matter what you do, but he's a fool"
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
All the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that living with you, baby, was sometimes hard
But I'm willing to give it another try
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

@David Deutschland, that's true.
He apparently was upset about his house keeper or someone resigning to be with her family.
She used to put flowers by the piano or something.
Anyway, life is full of things that interconnect as metaphors.
And at the end of the day
grief is always grief.
Whether you lost your lover (by death or diverse), a parent, a child, or a friend.
However, the song isn't truly sung from the perspective of a man, as it speaks of seeing other guys. The male versions use the opposite.

My second husband and I fell instantly & intensely in love to this song in 1990 when in our late 30's. We only ever heard those 4 main words, nothing compares to you. Today is the 16th anniversary of his passing away. Today is also the first time I've been able to listen to this song since then. Fourteen glorious years and so many, many memories to hold onto. And still, nothing compares to you Markie.
