Since then, while maintaining her singing career, she has occasionally encountered controversy, partly due to her statements and gestures—such as her ordination as a priest despite being a woman with a Roman Catholic background—and her strongly expressed views on organised religion, women's rights, war, and child abuse.
In addition to her ten solo albums her work includes many singles, songs for films, collaborations with many other artists and appearances at charity fundraising concerts.
Since converting to Islam in 2018 she has changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat.
In December 2019 she gave her first UK concert in five years at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, London.
On 26 July 2023, O'Connor's family issued a statement that she had died at the age of 56, without indicating the date or cause.
In the statement, the singer’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
The acclaimed Dublin performer released 10 studio albums, while her song “Nothing Compares 2 U” was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards. Her version of the ballad, written by musician Prince, topped the charts around the globe and earned her three Grammy nominations.

And I'm shy
I want to make love with you
More than I ever wanted to
Do you think that you could make me take some rest?
Make me lie down, make me listen to your chest?
Vishnu is and Vishnu starts
Oh my love, my delight
Is to be with you in the night
Oh your breath, your nakedness
All your softness, and your hardness
Do you think that you could maybe take some rest?
Come and lie down, take a listen in my chest?
Because Vishnu lives at the core of my heart
Vishnu is and Vishnu starts
Oh Vishnu, I sing to you
Just to say, oh Lord, thank you
The Vishnu Room is a deeply introspective and intimate song by Sinéad O'Connor, that explores the complexities of love, passion, and spirituality. The lyrics express a deeply personal sentiment of the singer's feelings towards their lover. It speaks of a love that is greater than any the singer has ever experienced before, one that transcends gender or societal norms. The singer admits to being shy, but the desire to make love to their partner outweighs it all, and the thought itself is both exhilarating and terrifying.
The Vishnu Room is a symbolic space of shared intimacy between the singer and their lover. Vishnu, the Hindu god, is seen as a source of creation and the ultimate reality. The line "Vishnu is and Vishnu starts" is a reference to the belief that Vishnu, the supreme being, is the source of everything and everything originates from him. The idea of Vishnu living in their lover's heart is a symbolic representation of the spiritual connection they share. The chorus is a plea to their lover to provide comfort and solace to the singer, as they long to be held and listened to, to find Vishnu within themselves.
Overall, The Vishnu Room is a deeply emotional and spiritual song about the connection between two people and their search for the divine within themselves.
