Hey There
Sinatra - Martin - Davis Jr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey there, you with the stars in your eyes
Love never made a fool of you, you used to be too wise

Hey there, you on that high flying cloud
Though she won't throw a crumb to you
You think someday she'll come to you

Better forget her, her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string
break it and she won't care

Won't you take this advice I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear?
Are you too much in love to hear?
Is it all going in one ear and out the other?

Better forget her, her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string
break it and she won't care

Won't you take this advice I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear?

Are you too much in love to hear?
Is it all going in one ear and out the other?

Overall Meaning

The song "Hey There" sung by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. talks about a man who is completely in love with a woman who does not reciprocate his feelings. The lyrics suggest that this woman is too proud to even give him the time of day. The man, however, is blinded by love and still holds out hope that she will one day come around to him. The singer advises the man to forget about her, as she only has him wrapped around her finger and doesn't really care about him.

The songwriters have cleverly created a protagonist who thinks they are wise, but in reality, they are merely infatuated with someone who has no interest in them. Moreover, not only is the singer in love with the woman, but he is also blinded by his love, and is not able to see the reality of the situation. The singer in the song is trying to make him realize the truth, but it is not clear if the singer will listen to the advice being given or not.

The chorus of the song repeats the message of the singer, asking the singer to forget about the woman with her nose in the air, and to take the advice being given to him. The lyrics are relatable, as most people have experienced unrequited love, and hope that someone will come around to them someday. However, the song tells the story of how this is often a futile hope and how it is best to move on from a relationship that is never going anywhere.
