Sophia Fortuin - She says to teach the children about the dark history. What is the dark history? The dark history is the racism and slavery reflected in the Dutch Zwarte Piet tradition! Dark history means bad things that happened in the past that hopefully we can all learn to never repeat!

@Soof Words and customs that portray one set of people poorly affect the people being portrayed poorly. What is 'racism' anyway? Some people think of it only as something overt like someone phisically hitting another but it goes far deeper than that.

@Lisa Allis I think most people think of history of colonial exploitation of colored people with nostalgia and do not want to see the dark side to it. If the intention was to teach, they would have been doing that a long time ago.

@Saul Contreras because he goes trough a chimney to deliver presents. Chimneys are filthy so thats why. But most times it was just to stay anonymous. For example, an old friend of mine his dad was a black pete. If he didn't have the black face, he would be recognized

This tradition is offensive to the people of color in Holland. I saw this visiting my girlfriend in the Netherlands. Blackface is now banned throughout Holland.
As for Saint Nicolas he was born in Myra, Turkey and became a Bishop, was Canonized and of Greek heritage. Saint Nicolas spread throughout the world. The European Dutch brought Saint Nicolas, SinterKlass to America. Saint Nicolas’ name morphed in to different names through Children’s books and stories. Xmas a beloved holiday steeped in tradition. Christmas on Dec 25, came about during Constantine’s Reign 3rd Century. AD.

It’s not banned completely, only in the major cities in the western part of the country where PEOPLE OF COLAH live. Thankfully we can maintain this wonderful tradition in most areas

I don’t know what’s being taught to the majority of these people protesting, I think the truth needs to be told about who is “Swarthy Pete”.

From everything I’ve gather from it up to this point, swarthy Pete is a Moor from Spain. According to Wikipedia he’s also a page. one historical definition of Page is a boy in training for Knighthood rank before a squire in personal attendance to a Knight. A page can also be an attendant of a person of rank.

So with me finding out just that bit of information about Swarthy Pete, I can’t get mad in any way shape or form about any dressing this way and celebrating Sinteerklass. I think it’s more offensive to say they are that color because they are going down chimneys and their clothes are not sooty.
